Engine mountings???

I was prodding around the engine the other day checking things over, when I noticed that a deep groove had been cut in the underside of the top hose inlet tube of the swirlpot. The aluminium is cut almost completely through! About 20mm beneath the cut is the front edge of one of the pulleys and the front edge of this is suspiciously shiny. It appears that the engine has rocked on its mountings to the point where the pulley has hit the aluminium hose inlet. Blipping the throttle will not replicate this, though I guess dipping the clutch whilst changing between 2nd. and 3rd.at 6000 might! The engine mountings are difficult to see, but do appear to be intact. Has anyone else had this happen? It would probably be worth a check as my engine is a fraction away from losing all its water!

Engine mounts... had the same thing, have now put 4 washers under the swirlpot to raise it a few mm just in case

Should have mentioned that my Griff has a serpentime engine, couldn't happen to the earlier engine because the swirl is behind the pulleys.

Try this simple test .. floor the throttle in a high gear out on the road .. does the gearlever move upwards? if so it's the engine lifting off the mounting with the torque reaction .. I've seen this a few times now .. gives a big *thump* as you go to change gear as the engine drops back down onto teh mount again .. from the top all looks ok - until yuo give it enough loading upwards to lift it clear. You culd try the same thing by lifting the engine under the sump (big wood block to spread the load0 and see if it lifts off .. if the car tyres leave teh groud though it's safe to assume the mounts are ok

Depending on the age and mileage of your car, it will probably need new mountings (about £25 each).
Again it is another thing affected by all that underbonnet heat.
The rubber mounts will be split and cracked, they are visible from above.

Yeah definitely the engine mounts. About a month ago the pulley had worn through my swirl pot neck and the coolant was being sprayed everywhere causing loads of steam. Took it to Fernhurst and they aluminium welded the hole, replaced the engine mounts and renewed the coolant for about £200 inc VAT. Top blokes as well.

Thanks everyone for your advice. New engine mounts are on order and a few washers will go under the swirlpot for good measure.

I had a similar groove, but it was due to the bearing unit for the free-pulley that is normally the PAS unit.

Cost was 15quid from TVR-Power and fitted within 30mins..

I actually came across it as the belt kept slipping off, and had a frayed side where it kept hitting the swirl pot.
