After changing the cam or- in my case- only the lifters, is it important to change back to mineral oil for some time- a new TVR recommendation,as i've been told? Or can I go on with my Castrol. If a change is necessary, why, how long, and which oil? 10W 40?
How can I avoid early damage of a new cam at the first start? Dos it help to use some kind of - word by word translated from german - "run-in-paste" on the lobes?

Thanks for information

When i changed my cam, i was told to run "normal" oil (gtx) in my case for a running in period, which was for about 500 miles. After which, i went back to mobil 1

exactly how many times have you changed the cam K77?

Edit:Facetious comments aside, I am having a new cam put in myself at the moment & I will definitely mention this to my mechanic.

You might also want to check out this warning against replacing the tappets without replacing the cam:

You can buy special cam lube which supposedly protects it from damage at first start-up after a cam change - spread it all over the lobes and tappets. You can get it from cam suppliers, and no doubt Demon Tweaks do it as well. The tappets should also be soaked in engine oil (obviously not solid versions) for a while prior to installation, preferably several hours.

to be totaly honest you may as well just put water in the engine instead of oil, just changing the tappets will scrap the cam within a day of running it, i would seriously change the cam!

Hamlet you would normally use cam lube or a moly based substance.

Then fire it up and hold about 2500 rpm for some 20 minutes to bed it all in. If that sounds to noisy then go for a drive right after it's started and keep the revs high and the load low.

So the damage is already done, because I had to drive home some hundred km from the garage after tappet changing. And if I remember the wear of only the worst tappet, a figure looking like an hour glass, I'm sure now, it didn't even rotate. So I can imagine, what happens to the new parts. Kind of learning by paying.

Sorry new cam new tappets, as a rule of thumb new to new on stressed contact parts, its a bit like putting your old main bearings on a new crank etc always use a camshaft lube oil this in most cases does not come with a camshaft, however in the past i have used STP mixed with 10% of engine oil.

hey dont worry mate there are plenty of so called experts that still make those kind of mistakes!! my advise now would be to run it untill it sounds a bit tappety then change the lot in one go.

You are right, but it won't last too long, because I'm also looking for some more than just 266 lb/ft.
