Useful information for anybody looking to replace a starter motor
Useful information for anybody looking to replace a starter motor
For me, replace with the standard starter motor every time. I got mine from Racing Green & arrived very quickly.
DO NOT buy a " Wosp Hi Torque starter motor " which failed on my Griffith. Thread here : http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=2...

Tim Brise personally delivered my starter on Friday, nice touch I thought...
Fitted Saturday, what a difference!! All power feeds checked but nothing looked like it needed changing. No more hot start issues over the weekend so I guess time will be the tester. Just a note that whilst some insist on using a recon or replacement original part they cant perform as well as these. They simply do not have the power to operate no matter what you do. The Brise motor does not have an external solonoid operating levers so do not jam when hot.

I had a similarly bad experience with a rather expensive & over hyped starter motor from PowerLite, it never engaged correctly & sounded nasty from day one.DO NOT buy a " Wosp Hi Torque starter motor " which failed on my Griffith. Thread here : http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=2...
I ended up buying a cheap standard Range Rover starter branded as Global Power from a seller on Ebay, I suspect it's Chinese made unit but it's also the best starter I've ever had on my Chimaera by far.
What you need to know is all these super duper expensive gear reduction starter motors are is a Denso unit like I used to fit to forklift trucks, the companies pedaling these starter motors (Wosp, PowerLite ect ect) just change the end plate for different applications.
There's nothing wrong with a Denso starter, actually they are rather good; the problems come when the end plates are incorrectly machined for the application causing alignment issues with the ring gear, often they are poorly assembled too as demonstrated with the Wosp case above.
Just look at the number of applications these modified Denso sellers offer, there's so many the opportunity to get the end plate slightly wrong is huge and dont tell me the fit and test one of their modded Denso starters on every car they list.
In the trade you can buy a brand new Denso starter for less than £50, so the sellers only need to hold a few hundred quid of stock at any time, when an order comes in they just tell their CNC machine to machine up the appropriate end plate and spend 10 minutes fitting it.
Total cost £65.00 with a sell price at over £200, nice margins dont you think? No wonder there are so many companies pedaling the modified Denso starter idea, it's a license to print money.
Personally I dont have an issue with people making strong profits, but I do when the product is not fit for purpose.
If you're tempted by one of these costly super duper gear reduction starter motors you'd do well to digest the above & remember this.... "Caveat Emptor"
Saying all that, the Brise starters do not appear to be a modified Denso unit, probably a modified something else though, so do make sure it's been tested & proven to work correctly on your specific application before you buy.

And remember not all cars with the Rover V8 use exactly the same starter motor (especially TVR's), so while a starter that fits a Range Rover will usually fit a Chim or Griff, you'll need a Rover SD1 starter if you have a Rover V8 Wedge.
There are slight differences in where the solenoid is mounted on Rover V8 starters which if you buy the wrong one can cause clearance issues with the right bank exhaust manifold, so it's not as simple as saying I have a Rover V8 engine so any Rover V8 starter will fit.
You have been warned!
