I need some help from all you guys in the know.
1992 Griffith: has some play at the the steering wheel, column joints have been replaced and everything seems tight nut and bolt wise, also track rod ends etc. are all ok.
I am told by "others" that a small amount of play is normal but I find this hard to believe, can someone please advise.
PS. it does not have power steering.

Many thanks.

No play to speak of on mine - also non PAS.

If it's not the UJ's or the track rod ends must be the rack itself?

I have a 1992 pre-cat, no play to speak of in steering. Did have a little a while back, just repacked rack with grease (via grease nipples) and it went away. Worth giving it a try, my rack has three great points. Regards, Pete

Thanks guys, must admit I have not spotted any grease nipples on my rack can you give me a clue where they are situated. I am all for a spot of grease, what type did you use?

Thanks

I have a non PAS 92 pre-cat too
I had play in my steering and couldn't fix it with new UJs
In the end it turned out to be wear in the intermediate shaft
Although we had the UJs bolts as tight as they would go we still couldn't get them to pinch tightly

I hope it's not this. The shafts are like rocking horse poo by all accounts.

You can get the splined shafts from kit car suppliers,
.

I got a different length one when converting to Scooby PS rack.

Thank you all for your input, I have now discovered the problem. I am mortified to say that it turns out to be the top universal joint. There is a moral here do not take what has been said by vendor or accept an invoice that shows joint has been replaced, furthermore do not attempt to check these type of problems without the use of a second pair of hands. Originally when I jacked the car up and removed the wheel the universal joint appeared ok, in hindsight I guess the weight of the suspension etc. was masking the symptoms; today however having co-opted my wife to move the steering wheel (with the car on it's wheels)it was obvious that this joint was the problem.
Thank you all and next time I must try harder before opening my mouth!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bugger eh?

I take it you'll be talking to the garage then.

I might know someone with some UJs if you need them
My precat has different sizes or I'd have them off him for my spares bin.

Yes I agree, but I am sure the UJ will not be such a challenge as sorting out the steering rack. Thank you for your kind offer regarding UJ's, but at the moment I am under "negotiation" corncerning replacing the UJ, and am expecting a FOC conclusions!!!!
