when refitting the exhaust Y piece should I assemble it dry where it meets the manifolds or should I use some exhaust gasket paste ???

Mine appears to have a gasket (or maybe it's just very neat jointing compound), so the answer seems to be it needs gasket compound.

If you have a 500, I assume it will use the clamps that look like big jubilee clips, rather than the bolted flat flanges on earlier cars?

These should provide a gas-tight seal without any gasket or exhaust assembly paste, provided they are clean, un-corroded correctly aligned.

If you do use exhaust assembly paste, make sure you get stuff that is suitable for use on manifolds - they run very hot, and a lot of exhaust assembly pastes are only suitable for use further down the system where the temperaures are less extreme.

Bear in mind, too, that any bits of paste that flake/drop off inside will end up clogging the matrix on your cat. This will lead to localised hotspots in the catalyst which may well destroy it.

My advice would be not to use any assembly paste or gasket compuound unless you definitely can't get a gas tight seal without it.
