Extra Virgin Olive Oil from The western tip of the Isle of Paxos....

Mineral oils are Ok but will need changing every couple of thousand of miles or when the car is thrashed.
Synthetics are longer lasting. If the car uses a bit of oil go for a 10W or 15W instead of a 0W.

Big discussion in the bible on this.
Can't say any more as the Oil Police are already knocking on the door.

So if the car is not using too much oil, 0W is OK?

You not trying to trick me into answering this and then get the oil Police after me? Some say it is too thin. Some say it is fine. Some say it will dissolve the block and all your hair will fall out...

I've used it with no problems.
I tend to use the thicker stuff though as it seems to stop oil use.

Try looking at the postings for member OPIEOILMAN.
He seems to be an expert and was giving advice on the forums here.
It was very enlightening and I'm sure you'll find your answer in one of his posts.

I've never had a problem with the 0W. It hardly uses any of the stuff and the oil pressure is always good.
I joined in OPIEOILMAN's thread once and he recommended a thicker oil.
I'm not so sure, My ethos is "If it ain't broke, it don't need fixing" I mean, if it was using a lot of oil and the pressure was a bit low at times I would change oil. Mind you, the car has only done 18k.

ah,one of my fave subjects!! only 15-50 mobil 1 will ever go in mine, ill never use the 0-40.if mobil didnt exist, then id use castrol rs 10-60 or another fully synthetic, thicker oil from a well known manufacturer.

If you track your car then I'd say the M1 0-40 is too thin. I used it for 10k miles but after a few track days the consumption increased noticeably. Used M1 15-50 for a while but twice on track it got too hot (water temp fine). Now use Silkolene ProS 10-50 following Opieoilman's recommendation and it seems fine. Track performance seems better than M1.

If the car uses a bit of oil like mine try Valvoline VRI racing SAE 20W-50W, its designed for high performance engines and is not too expensive at around £20 for 5 litres.

My Griff's going in for its annual treat, this time around its Castrol RS 10-60. By all accounts it quietens the tappets a bit and helps keep up a good oil pressure, not that I've experienced any prob's with the current oil in the engine.

I would recommend a fully synthetic 10w-50 or 15w-50 for extreme use.

These are probably the best ones:

I use Mobil1 Motorsport, but get it in France because it is a whole lot cheaper.

I use the Mobil 1 Motorsport myself, but I have the idea that the thinnest possible oil that gives a good pressure will flow and cool the engine internals best.

We use to talk about old Porsches as air cooled, in fact it's the oil taking most of the heat out of them!

The oilpump is a displacement pump pumping a fixed amount of oil for each pump/engine rev.
If the oil is too thick, much will go through the pressure valve and the rest will go to the bearings etc. If this amount is too small you'll possibly overheat even when the meter shows a good pressure.
If the oil is too thin, all of the oil will go to the bearings, but depending on the lubricating system, too much oil will "bleed away" on only a part of the bearings leaving the others with too little pressure and too little cooling. pt

Well I've always used 0W 40 in my 1992 400 and acording to old reciepts thats what its always had. Even though some may say its a bit thin for an older engine, the oil pressure is fine, it doesnt use too much, and the engine has covered over 60k trouble-free miles.
