head lamp tvr griffith replacement

Welcome to the forums Itamm66
There are a number of options available but I would personally look at the 7' conversion which retains the original look of the car. These were also fitted to the last 100 Griffs so arguably they are a standard TVR / OEM part so not really a modification as such. Check out the thread below...

Marco - the Sportmotive headlamp upgrade for the Griff introduces 7" H4 (Hella)units - as were fitted in the later Griffiths. To get these bigger lights to fit Sportmotive supply different pods that mount the light unit further forward in the pod. When fitted many people think these aesthetically look much better and take away the "squinty eyed" look of the standard lights. More to the point, they give much better light. You have the choice to have these as low beam only (as with the original fitments) or you can have them wired to have low and high beam from the pods. The fact they use H4 bulbs opens up many more options - I have just ordered the upgrade kit from Sportmotive and intend to fit 4K Lumen CREE bulbs.
If you are not happy to spend the £500 with Sportmotive then cheapest alternative is to get the original reflectors re silvered (if they need it) and buy a pair of higher output H1 bulbs like Philips Xtreme +130 or Osram Night Breaker

Has anyone tried a set of the latest LED H4 (or H7 which ever is used in the smaller lights) in the small lights. Surely that would be a big improvement without messing about with body work mods?

Hi Stewart (& Marco). IMO the best way to get BIG power lighting out of the Griff light pods is to use CREE LEDs; something like in the article you refer to in the Chim forum. In this thread ChimpOnGas has done a lot of work testing H4 CREE bulbs and up to now he is saying the beam pattern they produce is pretty close to a normal filament bulb (but perhaps with a bit of beam setter adjustment needed). The problem however for standard Griff owners is H1 is your only option and although H1 CREE bulbs are available I am not aware of anyone who has reportedly tested how their low/high beam patterns shape up. You could try researching new 5.75 inch H4 headlamp bowls that will have compatible mounting to the existing pods however I'm not aware that anything exists in that context.
Bearing all that in mind, and if you want to go to LEDs, my inclination is to take advantage of COG's excellent work and go with the H4 option which today has a semi-proven case that the beam pattern will get through an MOT. The problem now is the Sportmotive and Central TVR H4 upgrades, both using bigger 7 inch Hella lights, are the only H4/Griff options I know of - and both involve new headlamp pods.
FYI I've taken delivery of my Sportmotive pods this morning and I have to say they look very good quality - and the kit is very complete - including relays to allow low and high beam settings out of the pods.
Comimg back to a more basic solution. like I said in the last post, if you just want to improve the existing lighting on a budget then go with H1 Philips +130 bulbs and they will more than double the light output of the standard setup for around £24.

H1 versions of the LED bulbs;

Not sure whether there is space for the piggy back sections of the bulbs though.
I've used this type in H7 format for Tamy's driving lights (already had the Jeep LED head lamps fitted) and they are very bright.
