The internal parts of my engine is going to be balanced whilst the crank is out. To get this done properly pistons need to be removed from conrods, in order to find the right bobweights. This is what a couple of different engine builders tell me.

There's always a risk of destorting a piston while pressing the gudgeon pin out, since they are shrink fitted, my experience tell me. Sometimes a LOT of tons needed from a proper press tool. The pin comes loose with a big BANG. OK when you're putting new pistons in, but when reusing...?

But now I read that the RV8 has "semi-floating" gudgeon pins. In the Land Rover 4.0/4.6 overhaul manual a simple vice is used, and no heating when fitting.

Any experience of this? What is a semi-floating pin anyway?

Never done it myself as it isn't a diy on the home bench job.

Always taken mine to Chesman engineering and they have removed them while I waited.

They also are RV8 experts and will internally balance if you send/take your parts/engine there.

Haha, ChilliWhizz is right, Stockholm it is...

But how were you to know...? I'm impressed that somebody takes notice. Anyway, I'm glad for any tip, actually it happens that I send stuff over to UK and back. Much depending on the mood of our beloved old currencies.
