My pre serpent 500 just died on the M2 today. It has fuel. It will turn over and fire but immediately dies. It has a spark at the coil and the injectors are firing. The fuel pump buzzes normally when the ignition is switched. The immobiliser has been deactivated so it is not that. The inertia switch was not triggered. All fuses look ok. All earths are fine and the ECU connections look ok.

Any ideas?

Presuming it is now home, perhaps the first thing is to check in the morning is that fuel is actually reaching the cylinders, so turn the engine over and then whip a plug out and see if there is any smell of fuel or wet on the plug. With the plug still out and clear of the plughole, get someone else to turn it over and see if fuel vapour squirts out.

If it does, earth the plug on the engine, get someone to turn it over and see if you have a spark at the plug.

To me it sounds like it is one or the other. Just which.

Hi Jez, I'm going back 25 years, but the simptoms you describe sound like the ballast resistor to the coil has gone fritz. If and where a modern car has one though who knows! The ballast resistor allows a full 12volt during cranking then revert to 6volts on release of the ignition key. the engine will fire on the 12 volts supply, then dies when the key is released as the ballast resistor doesn't supply the coil with the 6 volts. So in a nutshell: electrics, the check spark plug for fuel/wet is good advice to get started with. happy hunting....

ah ordering a new one is not going well. I think I have a larger AFM but not sure and want to replace like for like so as not to bugger up the set up. the internal dimension of the AFM is 76mm. is this standard or is it a larger one? if so where do I get one. there seem to be lots on ebay for about £46

Does it say "5AM" or "20AM" on the label? They are deffo not interchangeable (without a remap).

You need to post a picture to get help on this one unless of course you can find a serial number. Has the inlet system been modified by Mark Adams for example? If so mine runs a Bosch so not the standard AFM.

ETA Picture posted while I was typing.

That doesn't look standard. Looks similar to mine and I was told its not a standard part. Search for that part number

...or any decent Motor Factor. I seem to recall it being a VAG part

Do a search on Google or EBay, using the number that is actually stamped on it:

0280 218 010

Then there are loads available
