Fixing the Roof

Can anyone lend me a comment here??

I have had a problem with the velcro on the roof for some time now. It doesn't stick to the bodywork anymore and everytime I put the roof down it pulls the carpet and the velcro away, when I try to open the sides.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what is the best way to go about fixing it back on.. glue type for both the carpet and the velcro.. Also, generally for the carpet on the inside of the car. I have noticed a few places where it is coming away from the places it has been glued onto. (on the underside of the boot lid, and generally in the boot.., as well as under the seat belts and the kickplates.)

I used Contact Adhesive on my S3, to stick the velcro back to the car.

I did that originaly, it pealed of again within 18 months... hence the hot melt test...

Check out woolies trim and have a look at adhesives in their product list. I've used their strongest stuff, S1358, for my carpets and sound deadening felt and believe me, its awesome. Its high heat resistant and has overcome the 1000 degree heat in my footwells so should cope easily with mere sunlight!

A word of advice though - dont use it on anything you're likely to want remove in the near future - a mig welder is only marginally better at sticking things together!

The only problem is I dont think they do it in anything smaller than 1 litre cans.

Dunlop 1386 is also pretty good but again, only available from upholsterers.

Peninsula have rivited my velcro to the body at my request. I've never found glue that works long enough.

I thought the velcro was riveted to the body as standard, anyway mine is. And it has stayed on for 12 years now !

later cars had a poprivit at either end of the strip I beleive. obviously a retro idea

The unofficial official fix is to cut a peice of coke can to shape, glue velcro to the strip giving plenty of overlap and then rivet it to the body. Mines been like that since it was resprayed (1994) and holds fine.

No, I mean I'm now confused as to which bit of velcro we're talking about.

Tamoras don't seem to have velcro bits, I wonder how that works.

Right to be sure here... The velcro bit is undone before lowering the roof. The bit of velcro which wraps around the edge of the body is the bit I am talking about. It should be stuck to the carpet and the top of the bodywork.

On mine the carpet and the velcro pull away, leaving a gaping hole. The velcro remains attached to the roof!!! So I have to manually pull it off of the roof side and place it over the hole..

Clear???

It seems the glue used after re-fitting the roof was put onto a dusty surface.. and I don't know what to use to remove the remainder of that old glue..

Hot melt or impact should both work fine so long as you make sure the surface is completely dry and as clean (grease free) as possible before you apply.
