Having pulled partly out the fascia panel to re-glue some instrument clips, I noticed a double black wire that I assume has disconnected from the ammeter. Only one wire and the light fitting are now connected.
The odd thing is that the double wires attach to a male spade connector about 5mm wide. The female terminal on the instrument is double the width and would take a spade connector twice as thick. Is this 'normal' or did they run out of the correct fittings that day?
PS electrics not my strong point.

When I rewired my dash the Voltmeter had the following connections:
Panel light, Black and red
Positive, Green
Earth, Two black wires connected to the spade terminal
Probably as the spade in your case is too small it fell out of the voltmeter when you removed the dash
Better to source the correct spade and re-solder to the two black wires.
