has anyone done this on here?i was just wondering whats involved,as although i dont mind the pas on the griff,i think i preferred the unassisted steering of my first griff(both cars serp engine).i just wondered how easy it is to chage?is it just the rack to buy,or do you also need different rod ends,column uj's etc etc?anyones experience would be most welcome-cheers,mv.

I'm potentially looking to go the opposite direction with my Griffith! If you're interested we could maybe save ourselves all the hassle of parts by swapping over the systems?!?

It can be done - you just need an unassisted rack to swap it with.

I'd go for a specialist... someone like David Batty or Leven could probably do it for you (if you didn't want to!)

nice idea trellis,but for the time being im going to keep my present bits.firstly im looking at possibly doing this in the summer,and secondly ill keep the old bits in store as i dont know if i ever might want to change back in the future.i see some dealers do the conversion for £1500 going to pas,so the bits shouldnt be too expensive id have thought-you could also try a breakers like bell hill.

Find someone with out PAS and swap the bits is the easiest way. Alternatively disconnect that PAS pump....

Isn't the PAS slightly quicker lock to lock? If it was changed over would it still retain the PAS speed, albeit without no PAS?

One other aspect to this is tyres - my 500 has no PAS and was fitted with 225's on the front when I bought it. I've since changed to narrower tyres (205's I think)which are much better because there's less tramlining and it's easier at low speeds.

Indeed 2.2 turns Lock-to-lock for the PAS vs' (I think) 2.4 for the non PAS. Rich...

Are we sure that the PAS rack is quicker and that it doesn't just have a smaller lock / larger turning circle? My 225 width wheels rub the arches on full lock with a non-PAS rack and yet they're original fit on a PAS car.

Good question, because if you put lock-stops on the rack then you would indeed get a wider turning circle with fewer turns lock to lock, but I had always understood that the rack was quicker on the PAS cars which is why the Tuscan race cars were so equiped allowing the driver to catch a tail-slide that much more quickly. Was in Racing Green a couple of weeks back and Martin showed me the power steering setup for one of their Corsa loan cars. Basically it had an electric motor mounted just below the steering column cowl and that was it. When turning the wheel you could hardly here it.

They were investigating wether it would be feasible to fit this to Griff/Chims as a cheaper alternative to the normal power steering.

I'm not sure how far they got with this but it looked interesting.

I know there are a few different lengths of steering shafts; the one from the pinion to the bottom of the seering column. Iguess the length of the pinion might vary. good luck
