Exhaust Heat Wrap – Does it work?

I’ve noticed a few TVR’s using Exhaust Heat Wrap

Forgetting about the aesthetics and lack of Bling

Does it actually help to keep engine bay temperatures down?

Pro’s and Con’s anyone?

I don't use it but I have had my S/S manifolds heat coated inside and out.

I've gone down the road of ceramic coating too.

I've wrapped the manifold s on my S with glassfibre tape and aluminium tape over that. Temperatures are well down nearby.

I wrapped the manifolds and exhaust on my cerb. It made a big difference to the under bonnet temperature but I think the tunnel got hotter as a result.

There are downsides. It's an absolute pig of a job. It's expensive about 200. They rot within about 2 years and then you have to replace the wrap.

After wrapping them I also had 2 sets of manifolds crack and then didn't replace the wrap and the next set didn't crack. Coincidence? I don't know.

That was my experience also.

Some interesting responses here, it’s looking like the wrap can cause manifold degradation and move the hot spots further down the exhaust…

Are we seeing similar with ceramic coating?

That wont effect the heat dissipation though will it?

My manifolds were wrapped by the previous owner about 9-10 years ago.
O
Admittedly the car was unused for about 6 to 7 years but the wrap is still in reasonable order and definitely lowers the under bonnet temperature.

Benefits are alledgedly two fold. Lower under bonnet temps' and an increase in speed for exhaust gasses being kept hotter.
ceramic coated here and wrap post turbo

I have always used wrap on my turbo builds, just use a decent quality wrap and it should last some time. I bought some ebay black stuff once which was horrendous was white and patchy in about a week and looked pants.

I highly recommend the DEI titanium stuff I've wrapped all my pipes in this. great reviews costs a bit more that standard stuff.

Def helps under bonnet temps.

I wrapped my 94 5L Griff manifolds. It destroyed the pre-cat in one manifold a little while after and I was told by a reputable garage that the wrap may have contributed to the pre-cats demise.

I have to say it ran great when the pre-cat destroyed the lambda sensor, mixture was a bit rich wink

I have used a little bit of wrap from Demon Tweeks + stainless straps. I wrapped after the Y-piece to protect the bottom radiator hose (400 pre-cat). I kept the wrap off the headers as a) its a pain in the ar*e to fit; b) I prefer the bling cool and c) its only a Sunday plodder and not a track day monster like you guys!

It's well proven in motorsport circles, especially for turbo installations.

Mine has done a year and looks perfect still.

You can get clear ceramic coating for stainless bits. So you get the bling syrup colour and better heat management.

Win, win.
