Just bought my 97 Griff and have been reading the Handbook to remind myself what each of the 4 knobs for the heating and ventilating do.
I have noticed that according to the book, rotating the top right knob clockwise will engage the cabin ventilation fan which if rotated will increase fan speed.
If the knob is pressed, this activates the heated mirrors which gets confirmed by the adjacent red LED.

In practice: turning the knob appears to do absolutely nothing until I press it which starts the variable speed fan which does increase speed if rotated clockwise, but the red LED also illuminates which is
presumable heating the mirrors as well.

Is the Handbook in slight error in favour of my findings or have I got a small wiring gremling?

Any knowledge would be appreciated.

Thanks, Paul

From memory:
top right - fan on/off (press), fan speed (rotate clockwise = faster)
top left - Hot or cooler (clockwise is hotter)
bottom left - recirculate or fresh - don't use that one as always on recirculate
bottom right - direct blower to windscreen or everywhere else - arrow gives the direction away. Again from memory clockwise is towards the windscreen.
Assumes all of them actually work and have been wired correctly.

Dutchone - that's exactly the same as mine ('96). It may be my imagination but turning the dial does have a very small effect although nothing compared to when it is pushed down so that the main fan is switched on.

duchone, what you say is happening is actully correct.the red light(mirror defrost)will extinguish after 5-10 mins or so-forget the exact time, then its best left in this position so the variable fan speed is always working.its a silly idea,as im sure youve realised that they cannot work independantly of each other so next time you need to defrost the mirror youll need to press the knob twice to do so,turning the fan off and back on again in the process!if you switch the variable fan speed off each time youve finished with it the you have to turn the heated mirror element on each time you need the fan on again!

Thanks, you have understood my question perfectly and cleared my query and confirmed that I do not have a one off 'special'.

Cheers.

We all have one off specials, it's just that some of the features were carried over from one car to the next!

Additionally pressing the bottom right switches on the heated seats! Rich...

RichB - Have we all got heated seats as standard? or was that just an option from new?

We all have the *switch* for heated seats, but having it connected to anything was a factory option.

it'd be interesting to know how easy these are to retro fit.has anybody done this?is it just a case of buying the missing relay and seat elements plug in then play,or is there some wiring/soldering to do to get the little yellow light on and everthing working?

What does pressing the top left knob do then?

A/C?

No a/c, heasted seats or PAS on ours.
I thought we were all supposed to be medallion wearers. Any of the above lets the side down.
