Top ball joint
Discussion
I have been confused by different stories about top ball joint replacement.
I bought a pair form a TVR dealer and have so far fitted to one side only but not yet set up the geometry. I was told that to fit the current joints the original single spacer must be replaced with two thinner ones. This is because the head of the joint is too big to get sufficiently close to the wishbone to get the correct range of camber setting. This information has been denied by the dealer that supplied the part, yet looking at the old and new the head certainly is bigger on the new one. I would think altering the spacer arrangement would cause other alignment problems. The new part is made by Delphi. Advice please.

you have the non-tvr part supplied to yuo. teh tvr part has a small ball joint surround, most replacements are too big to give lots of neggy camber.
it's ok as long as you keep camber sensible , say 1 deg neg.
if you're a track fiend and want lots of front neggy then you'll need the proper tvr part.
what you need is someone who has both sorts in stock .. wonder who might have such things ..

Thanks fort that JooSpeed. As is often the case I seem to have been suffering a bit of Chinese whispers with this. I do a bit of hilclimbing but am nowhere near competent enough to benefit form or understand the advantage of extra camber at th front. Provided it can be set as for normal use then I will be happy. Dealer that supplied the parts says he had them specially commissioned so fit correctly with no problem, he did however supply some scrubby bits of mild steel with holes drilled to match those in the joint. A mechanic working for another dealer told me that the parts from TVR now come with two spacers, have a 5mm bigger head than the original, and there has been a tech bulletin from the factory on the issue. The parts I have definitely have a bigger head than the one that came off, I have yet to set the camber so perhaps all will be revealed this weekend when I offer up my bit of old coat hanger dangling from a bit of bent ally.
