Did a track day yesterday so I think I may have fried the starter motor. Got home fine but tried to start it this morning and will not start on the key. Car starts fine on a bump start. It is not the hot start issue as I have new Carl Baker Meta Alarm and Hot Start mod.

Fuel pump primes and voltage drops when turning the key, I can hear the relay click. but I do not get the click from the solenoid engaging.

Anything else obvious to check?

You can jumper the starter motor from the solenoid from underneath the car just to see if it turns.

Hi Mathew,

Might be worth taking the Starter Motor/Solenoid off the car and stripping them both down, give them both a through clean plus light oil where appropriate, since the excess heat on a track day could have caused the starter to slightly seize up (you tend to get grime on the inside of the starter).

Regards,

Bill.

Thanks Bill, that could be a good shout, the starter I believe is a Denso derived heavy duty unit so it might be fixable.

Matt does it start with jump leads, try that first if it does get battery checked before you start taking the car apart as I could be that the battery just does not have enough oomph left
Worth a try

That is a very good point Gary, thanks. Volt meter is showing 12v but that does not necessarily mean the battery is able to deliver the current required to start the car. I don't think the battery has been replaced in my ownership which is 7 years so probably long over due.

Matt
If you do end up requiring a new starter I recommend the Bosch 0986017440 starter as mine has been 100% reliable without the hot start mod for years including a hot track day at SPA. I switched to the Bosch units when I first suffered the hot start issue on my old TR7 V8 with cheap refurbed starters.

The Bosch units are still readily available part exchange from local goodies store for about £100.

12v - is very low.

That is probably your problem.

Alan - I do hope so new battery would be preferable to new starter smile

Steve - excellent stuff, that was going to be my next question. Getting bored of replacing starter motors now. this will be 4 in 7 years if it does turn out to be the starter. I have had 2 standard units and 2 Denso derived high torque units. Bosch may be a good alternative.

Matt, your battery is on borrowed time. Replace it now at your convenience with your preferred make and amperage and not when you are stranded at the other end of the country and rushed into buying an over-priced rubbish battery that doesn't fit the box properly.

Measure the battery box as well, I have seen many all of different sizes, and those few mm's will mean the difference between the battery fitting or not.

Happy to help if you need a hand

Yep, £ bet on the battery.
Got a Bosch 072 from Alpha Batteries for £89.99 delivered last year.

Matt,
Measure the battery box and get on that fits, with the highest CCA you can get.
I've got ABX AGM on both Griffs and never had an issue. Good CCA and 5 year guarantee.

Thank you very much for all the advice and offers gents. I have not had a chance to look at it yet but I will try jumping it from my daily when I get back from work later. Fingers crossed new battery as opposed to new starter.

I will post up the result later.

Ours is a ABX AGM AX D26R in both Griffs so assume your would be the same. The Glass inernals offer deep cycle, low disgharge and leak proof. The 750CCA has been tested up to 900 so very high cranking capacity.

Also if opting for a new NON lead acid battery, make sure your charger can handle it.
