Could anybody write a procedure to mod the exhaust box?
I have my exhaust off at the moment and I am thinking of doing it.
The griff is a pre-cat, any downsides to modding the exhaust?

Does the noise become a pain after a while?

You shouldn't really need a procedure as such.

IIRC they cut open the last box using a cut down the middle and a cross cut at both ends to allow you to peel the box open and get access to the two perforated pipes. Cut these out replace with solid wall tubes welded back into position. Close the entry flaps and re-weld. Refit back on car.

Hope that helps.

Al , thanks ,that has helped.
Do you know what diameter tube I would need to get hold off?
Do they use stainless rods(or wire) to weld the tubes in and the box back together?

Is it much louder?

you will be too loud for all trackdays without VERY good track silencers.

noise doesn't annoy me...i'm in front of it!

noise is harsher tho, I'm putting another silencer in for these reasons.

The tube is Mild steel, 52mm dia and approx 16swg thick
I think the code that's used in the trade for it is RST 9

To keep it clean and tidy do the surgery on the top of the box and it wont show a scar when re-installed.

Hope this helps.

Only a pain if you hate getting noticed! An really not that bad under a constant throttle cruise - only really load on the spin up or dropping down in gear (best in the cold) for the back fire - which you may or may not get depending on th std setup of the chip - my first one was awesome bangs on the over run, current on less fuelling and less bangs - but still load - BUT THE LS6 and not precat will sort that!

I've been looking at doing this myself also, is there any reason why you can't just cut the silencer box out completely and weld 2 tubes in place of it, or are there mounts on the silencer box?.

The MOT man might question the lack of a silencer .. hence why people just cut a hole in the top - as it really does not show.

The griff 500 was about 90 bd when new and that was what was allowed at the time (i believe) - a sports exhaust can raise this to about 98~104 db .. so best not shout about it at MOT time

My 4.0 ltr Chim was 105db @ 4000 rpm, 108db @ 4500 and it peaked when the trottle was blipped @ 120db.
