My little baby has only 230BHP, I've read with interest that the 5.0 boys when trying to go above 300BHP it's costing £1000/10BHP ish.

Has anyone considered ditching the fuel injection and the ECU and going for a lightened/balanced RV8 (or even a Yank ) on CARBS.

Talking to some of the RV8 racers (serious MG's etc)this is achievable without a great deal of cost (I would invest the money saved by fitting a good extinguishing system in the engine bay).

Does anyone have any idea's/thoughts/experience???

several of these going on at the moment paul.

std RV8 5.0 can hit 300 with carbs, or lots of induction. my last engine is around 310.

i have a 5.0 tuscan challenge engine going in mine at the moment (380-400)

and jellison on PH has a chevy LS1 going in his with 400+ in std tune, i believe they go to 5-600 with work!
'course you need transmission work by then!

there's also a blown V8 appearing in a Tiv this season (but the guy wants to suprise people, so no names )

several ways open, all you need is time and deep pockets!

BTW have you heard about pheonix' 1000bhp cerby?

andy

hope to have all of these at the modified TVR trackday i've arranged in sept 05 (+ twin turbo griff and several 6-800 bhp racers...and Peninsula-TVR Le Mans T400R...oh yes!)

I believe that Cirks took this approach, not sure about it being a cheaper option though!

I'm looking for the man who has a 330ish RV8/V8 and is upgrading and wanting to sell his 'old' one - this may/should be cost effective!?

Oh I see now........... I've just read some of siwes posts and he's a 'highly modified 5.0'.

Sorry I missed the joke/dig

Back to the plot - it got to be less than 5.0 'cause I is a pre-cat and proud of it.

What did the early Tuscan Racers use before a 5.0??

er...Paul, I thought you were after an original instrument panel for the sake of _originality_?!!!

Any news from your trimmer on the ball park figure for the dash retrim? Ta

Didn't Apache have his on carbs?

I took the carb option and had the nice chaps at V8 Dev slap on a 4 barrel edelbrock, made a hell of a difference whilst also eliminating a lot of potential probs with injectors, ecu, lambdas etc. This was in conjunction with a P404 grind cam

Hi Ben

I'm at the Trimmers tomorrow AM.

I'll keep the old engine, never going to sell the car so I can modify within the original re-mit.

Most cars go alot faster than they did 1992, and I think the Griff is partly responsible for this, as it was the icon (or the one to beat). So some 10 -15 years later, I better do mine justice and install a 300+ lump............ there I convinced myself if no-one else!!!

Any idea of what you gained in figures??? But more importantly what did you gain in drivability, speed, servicing, acceleration, less break-downs??

Is the ECU totally discarded (probably not) or just the fuel profile functions??

The main reason for doing this was to improve drivability (driveline shunt).
First off we went for the cam, carbon trumpets enlarged plenum and chipped and mapped ecu, didn't work. Had a couple of visits to V8 and Mark but to no avail then a carb was suggested, this got rid of plenum, trumpets, mass airflow meter, sodding stepper motor, ecu, lambdas and injectors along with all associated wiring (a lot of stuff that won't go wrong again) This didn't work either till it was noticed that the advance retard had been connected once this was sorted the transformation was incredible.
Extra torque everywhere
No shunting whatsoever
sublime intake roar
Acceleration kept going through 6500, I limited myself to 7300
If it was floored the acceleration would be steady till around 5000 when the second choke opened up (I actually lost it doing this on a damp road in 4th at around 80/85
Didn't manage to re test on the RR

That's exactly what I wanted hear - Apache thank you very, very much

Is 'shunting' a product of the 5.0 or is it on any Griff??

Lastly, can I be a complete cheeky-tw*t and ask for a pic of the top of your engine, or if you're at a meet in the next couple of months I will come with my own camera and of course a pocket full of 'beer tokens' for us both to share.

Can I ask a silly question?

How come it's so expensive to get a 5.0 to 300bhp? My neighbour has a dyno plot for damn close to 300bhp for his 4.3 Griff (lots of mods), and GavinR has a plot for 292bhp for his 4.2SEAC (lots of expensive mods)- so given the 700-800cc advantage of the 5.0, why is this figure so expensive to obtain?

I realise there is more to it than headline figures, was just trying to keep it simple.

Gazboy - I think it gets even more expensive above 300BHP.

I don't want to just throw money at my car I want to have a clear plan before I start - hence the questions.

Shunting seems to be a 5.0 issue, for pics go to the website link in my profile. Car is sold now so you'll have to nip over to Holland to see it in the flesh I'm afraid

I think the only pre-cat available that will get anywhere close to those figures is the 4.3 version, even then it'll probably need fettling a bit.
Tell a lie the very rare, 10 I think, 4.5BV versions do exist and will make that sort of power, but if you see one a year trading hands it's been a hot summer i.e. a rare year.
The main pre-cat, the 4ltr, will need to be blown/NoS'd to get those sort of levels this side of a £5K+ racing engine spec rebuild, poss even £10K IMHO.
