My first run out and my first breakdown????
Discussion
Hi Guys.
Well after purchasing my griff 500 some 5 weeks ago, the tax disc finally arrived after a number plate change.
I decided to go out for a run. nothing too taxing, just a run around the country roads around Rochdale and a blast up a couple of motorway sliproads, about 30 miles in all.
On the way home I thought I would treat the old girl to some optimax, so i pulled in at the shell station and filled up.
Went into garage, paid for fuel and got back into car. ignition on, fuel pums pressurised and I turned the key.....NOTHING. Starter as dead as a Dodo. I got a couple of heafty lads to give me a shove and she bumped OK. Got home, starter stilll not working. let her cool down and hey presto, starter OK again.
Do they all do this or is this a sign to hassle Tony at Hexham Horseless Carriages for a new starter? I am assuming its a sticky solenoid?
Neil.

You've got exactly the same symptoms as my car developed after about 2 months of ownership.
There are a couple of things to try
1) Add a new earth lead from the battery to the block, mine goes through the battery breather hole in the passenger footwell and then bolted onto the block. You could try using jump leads initially to see if it helps.
2) Add a relay to the solenoid feed to boost the current that gets to it. This is a modwise idea, hopefully David Beer will be along to explain the components you need to make one up.
Heatshield may help but it may also make things worse according to certain posts on PH. I've got it fitted individually to the motor and the solenoid on mine and it works.
BB,
Is this worthy of putting on the TheGriffithPages as it seems quite a common question/fault.

If I`ve done this right, the below is a shortcut to a current V8 starter post on the General TVR Stuff forum on this very topic.....seems it`s going to be a bumper month for starter suppliers. Very useful link to heat shield supplier too.

Range Rover have a relay in the starter solenoid circuit(TVR NOT), put one back in. No 13 amp circuit should be fed via the cable used, even the horn and fans get a relay, it can be done in the passengers footwell. I personally think every car should be done, even if its not happened yet, but of course it would mean a lot less starters sold, so may not be too popular !
Hi guys.
I spoke to tony at HHC today and on monday it will be booked in for modification. He is going to go the new sub loom and relay route.
I also had a good run out today over to ribblehead and dent / hawes creamery for lunch and fast trip home. What a car. What a day.
sods law. Today i ensured I parked everywhere on a slight incline and it never misbehaved once. It is definitely a woman then my car
fickle or what.
