Plucked up courage and decided to get on with installing new up-rated battery cables as hot starting was becoming quite chancy. My fear was that I would have to remove the dashboard to feed the cable through the bulkhead grommet. Removing the dash isn't difficult but in this cold weather it was just one job too far. As it turned out the only part you have to remove is the whale tail to access the grommet ( although in typical TVR fashion you have to remove the O/S rear wheel to do that!)

I upgraded from the standard TVR 25mm cable to 40mm, having heard that 50mm is beginning to get tricky to get around the bends. My battery, by the way, is in the footwell. No wonder the cable suffers from increased resistance when hot as it is a whopping 2.2 metres long! At the same time I also replaced the earth cable in the same size. I left the old chassis to engine cable in place as it is difficult to access and ran a new 40mm cable from the chassis to the starter motor lower fixing bolt.

For Christmas my son bought me a battery cable crimper and what a piece of kit that is for the money! £26.00 including p&p. On the 40mm terminals it applies (allegedly) 8 tons of hydraulic pressure and has 11 sets of dies for varying cable sizes. Amazing value for money.

I'm doing this job this week although I'm using 35mm cable.
I bought one of those crimping tools about 4 years ago to do this, no one can say I don't prepare in advance biggrin

Replacing the big cables will not cure the 'no solenoid operation' . It will turn over quicker, if that was your hot start problem,.in most cases of slow cranking when hot, another new earth braid will cure it. But good on you for improvements .

Thanks David, my problem is ultra slow turnover when hot, not a solenoid problem. I will fit a relay to the solenoid later but that is not a problem at the moment.
