Just seraching the forum for information on geometry setup and noticed that several people have said that the big spacer on the top ball joint (later model wishbones) should be in FRONT of the ball joint (thus maximising the castor angle) rather than behind.

I was just looking at some piccies of my car when I changed the brakes (before I stripped the suspension) and my spacer is BEHIND the ball joint, thus decreasing the castor. This has not been changed since I bought the car 3 years ago (or noticed on servicing) but I do know the car had its upper wishbones replaced some time before I bought the car.

Please can someone confirm where the spacer should be and what the effect on the handling will be (as I've never found the handling to be bad at all?

I was wondering whether people had experimented with this.

I find the car quite hard to control when it starts to slide due to the steering weighting up greatly meaning I have to apply alot of force to the steering to control the car.

Using this amount of force seems to negate any feel because i'm driving with my arms and not my hands or finger tips (like in an Elise or even a Tamora). Would reducing the castor angle (changing the washers to the other side) help me out with this problem?

Depends. Seen single piece, two half pieces with bits before and after. If you have any doubt measure it. The more castor the bigger the self centering effect will be and the heavier the steering will become.

I've run upto 12 degrees castor now on the 520 and apart from the heavy steering, no real difference. Put it back to 6 though

I regularly move the spacer to the rear of hte ball joint. you increase hte bump steer .. you should really lower the steering rack or raise the track rod ends to suit .. but I think the lighter action more than compensates for a bit of bump steer in this case.

it's a top mod and cheap as chips.

you'll lose castor induced camber change so it might understeer more in slow tight corners .. if it does use your right foot more!
