Having just spent the last hour trying to get my gear knob off the griff 
I am not having any luck Anyone ??

Grasp your knob firmly in one hand and twist it anti-clockwise. Might take some efford to get it to come
Tride it with a pair of mole grips holding the shaft, and with a large pair of plyers wraped in rag twisting the aloy knob, hence the severe leverege to shift it slipping and damaging the knob.

Because the gators are being replaced on the tunnel,
Looks like i will be able to polish my knob now, the scratches are not too bad.
