Coolant level advice please!!????

Hi Chaps,
Regularly check my coolant level and it stays about half way up the expansion tank (where the join is)sometimes have to top it up slightly, however went for a blat yesterday and everything was fine with the temp gauge, checked it this morning and it is a good inch or two higher then normal, whats that all about?? air in the system???
Didn't know Griffs had 'auto top up' feature?
Will try running it and see what happens, any suggestions gratefully accepted!!
