Lights 'Throb' with the engine

Anybody else come across this - it seems that the lights go brigh and dim on tickover to 2000 rpm, then stay full brightness (headlights too). The volt gauge reads a healthy and steady 14-15 volts.

would imagine that the lights are taking some power from the alternator as the battery is not fully charged or is close to its max output.

wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it hasn't done it before or the starter sounds laboured or slow. check the earths as they can become iffy over time. often the Tivs run very close to the limit. electric/cooling/TRACTION!

you'll probably find that they dim when the fans cut in as well.

This can sometimes be an indication that the diode pack in the alternator is about to go?

reckon you'd see high volts on the guage if diodes were on the way out. 15+v?

Could be a dodgy earth connection?

That's what it turned out to be on my Griff when I had flickering lights. The most likely candidate is the large body-to-chassis bolt at the front left of the radiator intake. I bought a new bolt that wasn't rusted to bits and the problem went away.
