As my search for a Griff 500 gathers pace, I'm just a bit concerned about chassis rot.
Can someone just explain which are the most vunerable areas to check and also where I need to be looking (don't want to miss anything)
Also what should a chassis look like in good nick and obviously one in bad nick.
I'm sure these are simple questions to the experienced guys, I just need a bit of help.
I do intend to get Rob Ingleby on board at some stage..

Underneath is a good place to look!
I was told to do the screwdriver test. If you can push a screwdriver through it then its too rotten!
You'll know when you see it though. I was suprised at the amount of rusty chassis I did see, even at dealers. Don't be put off by a bit of surface rust though.
Best thing to do is pop along to a TVRCC meet and get an enthusiast to walk you round the car. I did it for someone else on here once, took them for a little drive too. They now own a Griff (the very one I pointed out to them!).
At the TVRCC meet you can also look under a few of the cars (best to get owners consent) to get comparisions.

Most of the chassis is accessible for inspection. The main areas to look at are immediately behind the front wheels, where the outriggers turn through 90 degrees to run along under the doors. The wheels flick up stones which will chip off the paint and allow corrosion to start.
Also crud can build up between the rail and the body, harbouring moisture, which will accelerate rust. The outriggers themselves may harbour crud between themselves and the body, but this can be a little trickier to spot. You may be able to see the tops of the outriggers from one end.
They can also rot under the manifolds, as the heat from the exhaust flakes the paint off and you can't see this area easily. Also check the lower front wishbone cross members, as these can rot through.
Alternatively, buy mine, which has no rot!
