Mod-Wise two stage fan questions

Sorry if this has been covered before but the search engine is down (again)
I've got the 'brains' all wired in OK and plugged into the Otter switch but its the temp sensor bit(s) I'm not so sure about. I hope someone can help.
The noddy guide says the 'torpedo' sensor just gets cable tied to the drivers side rad hose but the picture in the bible (p145) shows it on the opposite side and attached to the metal pipe from the swirl tank - which is correct?
There is also no specific mention in said guide about where to put the temperature dial bit. Does it also go onto the hose (or pipe) and act as a sensor or can it go on the chassis cross member above the rad/anti roll bar. If its the same as the Kenlowe kit I installed on the LandRover there are no sensors in this so it can pretty much be mounted anywhere. Is this right?
Do I have to worry about getting the temp dial bit wet ?

I installed this system 2 years ago, excellent investment. David advised me to put the torpedoes on the return hose, and so I did, works perfectly.
David was so nice to send me a replacement aluminium box, the old plastic box melted in Italy. As you can see it's on the crossmember, do not put the box to close to the cat.

Have I been shortchanged or have I got a different kit?
I've only got 1 Torpedo and 1 dial
My kit comprised
Big lump with all the wires hanging out of the bottom of it like a squid.
Said wires a) break into the 2 fan wires at the connecting boxes b) link to the Otter switch c) the optional power cable from the starter (which I haven't connected yet) which keeps the fans running when the engine is switched off
Torpedo sensor attached to a single dial control box
Sensor(s)... Torpedo(s) and a box with 2 control dials.

I set mine to about 75 C lower temp, and 85 C high temp. When I go to Italy I change them to about 65 C low and 75 C high to compensate for the high temps and the fact that the engine has to work his socks of in the mountains.
What do you reckon Peter, you being the "Albert Einstein" of TVR knowledge, is this about right or would you suggest otherwise.

To some extent it will depend what stat you're running, there's no point switching the fans on below the stat temperature if you are sensing off the top hose. It just means the fans runs continuously as soon as the stat opens.
If you're putting the sensor in the bottom hose then those figures seem reasonable for an 84 deg stat with a target running temperature in the mid-to-high eighties.
When you lower the fan switch temperature with the sensor in the bottom hose, what you are doing is bringing the fans in at higher road speeds. The benefit from having the fans on reduces as the road speed increases, and at some point (probably around 50 mph) there's really no point having the fans on as they make no difference on top of the ram air flow. But below that speed, having the fans on does give you extra cooling, and the slower you go the greater the benefit.
The Griff rad being at such an angle, even at 70 mph there is quite a benefit from having the first stage on, although not neccessary. Coming back down from cruise, the crucial speed is 55 mph when they need to come on to stop any increase in running temp, again not neccessary but nice to have.
