Hi All,

To cut a long story short i have been having probs with my Griff since i bought it a year ago, it hesitates and jerks from about 2500 revs and below.

Changed lots of things and a V8 specialist (who hasnt seen the car) is convinced from my description that it will be the fuel mapping. He is going to get me a Tornado chip and will fit it and if it cures the problem i pay, if not he will take it out FOC.

My question is, is this possible without having the chip tailor made on a rolling road for my car?? I get the impression it is a generic tornado chip?.

I know that there could be other problems such as the airflow meter or the injectors but is it possible that this will cure it?

Any advice welcome?

Cheers,
Lig.

Mark Adams, the man who programs these chips, has said that before mapping any vehicle he gives it a thorough check up. It sounds to me as if this is what your car needs. I suggest you get Mark to wave his magic wand over it, that way you can be sure everything is working correctly and as a bonus you get the extra responsiveness that comes from a Mark Adams chip.

My view with mapping cars has always been to fix the problems so that the car is running perfectly and only then to adjust the map for extracting more power.

If the fuel map is wrong now, then ask the question "Why?". Are the injectors OK? Does it have a faulty airflow meter? Are the lambda sensors OK? etc. A simple remap will not fix these problems. (but it may disguise them)

Just had mine done by MA.
The injectors were gummed up, and once cleaned it ran better. However I still had MA put his Tornado chip in.
But he maps it for the individual car and he states he would never do one for a car he hadnt seen.

Best bet is to contact him and try to arrange somewhere for him to see the car.
I had mine done in Shrewsbury.

 everything before...

Tornado themselves, do have base maps for RV8s, which i believe includes the 5.0, and the type of chip/software that it is, MA can work on all the factors that he needs to do the job right.

MA will check and sort any issues you have with the car prior to setting.

will then install the chip (and socket)

will then install a suitable base map for you configuration from his library of 100s.
(4L/5L/Induction mods/Fueling Mods/power/etc/etc)

he will then adjust to suit your actual car on the R/R for the best results.

This will take a while, but he will split the day with other cars to get the most productive day for 2-3 owners.

This is an absolute bargain! with brian at Mech repairs or Paul at Austec, you CANNOT get as much experience and knowledge on RV8s as you will there for anywhere NEAR this kind of money!

Do it! standard/fast road or race...everyone uses it/him and for good reason.

disclaimer: i am not in the employ of MA nor am i on a %...mores the pity!

Agreed.

However, a word of caution...

1) DON'T make any other plans for the day! MA won't stop on a car until he's done all he can and the owner is happy.... unless you're the first "slot" of the day, expect to hang-around for a couple of hours! Still, it's good entertaining stuff... book the whole day off work and enjoy.

2) DO set a budget. As mentioned, a poor running car can be quite simple to fix, but not always. Unless you really want to burn a couple of grand I would avoid getting drawn into conversations about increasing power/torque. Just sing "la la la" in your head until MA walks away

3) DON'T be surprised or disappointed if the RR figures aren't as high as you expect; they never are. The mission for the day should be to get the car running sweet, nothing more. If that's achieved then you should feel really chuffed - don't worry if the power is down.

Hope you get it sorted.

Why not invest £5 on some fuel injector cleaner and see how it behaves after a week...

Cheers all,

(did the injector cleaner thing a while ago and it did bugger all - but thanks for the advice)

Had a few good mails from people and am taking the car, first to V8 developments on Friday and then on to RPI on Saturday for chip fitting and test drive....however from my various chats (and hopefully V8 Dev will confirm) things are swaying towards a worn cam opposed to a fuel remap??!! I will 'hopefully' wrap this thread up next monday with some concrete results!!

Until then....

Had to do many "La la las" in my head to stop me self buying bosch injectors that i couldnt afford...yet

Correct, although I wasnt disappointed with my RR figues as took a ball park figure in my head, and i was more after the engine being tweaked to run Smoothly and boy it does that with a bit more umpph to

Hope you get to the source problem

Well chaps...just to close a thread 'ish'... I took the car to V8 Dev, really good chaps with good advice but I arrived late and unfortunately they were pushed for time. They fitted a 'green tune resistor' which initially seemed to help matters but then on the drive to Norwich the car kept stalling and idle revving was too high and griff generally wasnt a happy bunny....

The following morning I went to RPI who were also very knowledgable and friendly and they put eveything back to standard and fitted the Tornado chip and a new vacum advance unit on the dizzy and set the timing. And the result was that the car did have a much better power curve, much smoother and better drivability but sadly it didnt cure my hesitation problem!!

I am therefore going to send the chip back (as agreed) because I am going to put the money into some further diagnostic checking and then possibly a rolling road session.

I guess the only good news was that both parties didn't suspect a worn cam!!

The saga continues and hopefully one day my hesitation problem will be cured....next point of call is the Airflow meter, Timing and ECU........

Lig!!

From my experience of owning one of these for 4 years and reading the Griff forum this is a common problem. I do feel that wear in the drive line can exacerbate the problem so check for backlash etc first cos going the other route is expensive.
Injector cleaner=snake oil, get em removed, cleaned and balanced.
MA will find a lot of info regarding the ignition and injector set up, but, he didn't with mine (2 visits)
I ended up binning the whole plot and wedged a 4 barrel Webber in, a vast improvement

Have tested my AFM as per the 'bible' and the volts didnt change at all when revving! heres hoping that the AFM is knackered! A friend is lending me his AFM to test, so fingers crossed, will let you all know when i have fitted it!
