If someone has 5 mins could they give me a quick run down of exactly what the dash pushbuttons are supposed to operate on a 1996 500?

From the hazard, then there are two, three in the middle. Chasing a fault and the handbook and/or bible are no help!

Thanks.

On mine, from hazard switch; door lock; boot release. Three in middle; side lights; headlights; rear fog (from right to left)

Thanks a mil.

That's what the handbook says. My boot release is actually on the underside of the steering wheel. Is that normal?

By where your left knee is? That's the button to turn the dash lights off, though on mine its wired as a fan over ride, so maybe someone for some reason changed its operation.
What does the original boot release button actually do now?

My 96 500 was also the same as above but I modified it to:

From left to right: Hazard, Fan override, Boot unlock Fog lights, headlights, side lights.

The switch under the steering formerly for panel lights is now a 12 volt socket to save trailing cables from the drivers door.

Over the winter I will be putting another 12v socket on the passenger side to save cables trailing across the heater panel.

I thought that both the panel switch and the door locking switches unnecessary
