I'm looking for an original and light refurb on some oz split rims. The wheels are both the two piece pre cat type and the three piece last se model type and are new old stock wheels, never used with just handling marks, but do not have centres. I have perfect old centres which will need refinishing to match. Did the se type three piece wheels have lacquered diamond cut finish on the centre 'hex nut' shape like the pre cat ones or were they all silver paint finish?
All recommendations and pointers much appreciated.
Cheers, Mike

Hi

I wanted my Pre Cat Griff Oz wheels refurbished.

I had a quote from these guys.unfortunately they only communicate via email. They came recommended , so haven't used them yet.. They maybe affiliated with a well respected Wheel refurbishment company near me in Flaunden .

Thanks for the reply. Might be worth me dropping them a mail then :-)

I had my OZ splits done by this company based near Milton Keynes.

They couldn’t re-turn the centre caps but did a very good job of the rest.

Another one- thanks again!
I've not heard of anyone who can do the turned 'diamond cut' type finish in the centre caps?

Just a word of caution . ( Maybe not in your case AJP Griff ) . What they did say was the Bolts on the outside of the Rim may look in good condition . They may need replacing so you could be looking at 30 Bolts @ £3 a bolt for each Wheel yikes

Just incase anyone else reading this post has like me , unrestored 25 year old OZ split rims.smile

ETA : That was my own research re the price of the Bolts .

The bolts are the worst thing about mine, they have dulled and the zinc plating has oxidized allowing light corrosion to set in. I might consider just getting shiny new bolts and getting the centre caps painted up to match I guess, just not sure if I'd be happy in the end though. Its a little frustrating that they are brand new but yet have the light handling marks which show on the lacquered rims, sort of a shame to have to remove all the lacquer and original o.z. graphics to polish them up.

Mike,
If there is corrosion showing on the visible part of the bolt chances are they are badly corroded once the wheel is split and their integrity compromised. We had ours done here and were really pleased, although not sure if the old boy is still working?http://www.renowheel.co.uk/Cardiffwheelrepairers/
We went for titanium bolts.

Thanks Paul, how's it going? wavey
The heads look awful but the threads not too bad, but a touch of white oxidization is present. I definitely want something smarter and wouldn't choose the std bolts again. Luckily theres no corrosion from the heads on the polished rims, just a slight impression from the head, the darkness inside the hole rim is just sealant

Looking at the bottom pic I would say they have been done before. The holes look elongated from a previous polish

No, they've not been done before, the holes are round, bit of an illusion from the squished sealant I guess.

Not bad Mike. We went lacquerless as its the lacquer that cracks and then you get the horrid milky effect.
The bolts look pretty good so could you get them lightly blasted and coated?
tried polishing them yourself? Not hard, just time consuming.

I think I'd like some shiny chrome bolts. Like you I think I will go without the lacquer but doubt I will do it myself as I need some centres painted up and so will get the wheels painted at the same time and therefore probably just get the lot done all at once I guess.

Mike ... did you get the wheels refurbed in the end ???

If so did you keep the old bolts..... I 'm looking at getting mine redone "again", and looking for bolts with "OZ" markings on them.... you bolts look in condition, and nothing that a strip down and re zincing will not sort out

Hi Steve, no, I didn't get them done after. I might go down the re-plating route myself when I do the wheels but it's not a priority at the moment to be honest. The Challenge car is stuck in the workshop now which is in turn holding Griff things up so I doubt I'll get any time on the griff for at least a few few months from now ☹

All sorted now, well, chosen anyway. I've taken the wheels to Rimscarnated in Chippenham. I'm having the rims polished without lacquer and the original bolts will be chromed which is nice. Rather looking forward to seeing the end result now! biggrin

Ah-ha, so you're the man then Colin!
They told me about and showed me the pictures of some recent ones they did and I thought they looked great. Their work looks superb and they seem to have a big following , even receiving wheels from the other side of the world to re-furb which is reassuring.
Really looking forward to getting mine back now 🙂

Just had a look at their website...…. new lips could be the way forward for me ……. had mine adonised about 15 years ago, brilliant for non-maintenance purposes, but a little lacking in the shiny department...… I need some bling biggrin
