Afternoon people,

After a very annoying couple of weeks with unrelated electrical probs, most of which are now sorted, I have what I suspect to be a very related electrical problem. I have had a new alarm fitted (one of the things that went wrong) and now the fuel guage doesn't work, I think the old immob used to power the guage and obviously the new one doesn't, does anyone know whether the old immob used to send power to the sender or guage? Or if the sender is powered the guage will work? If so what is the best way to get power to the sender, I suspect that if I get a feed from the fuel pump relay to the guage this would be OK?

Any help much appreciated.

On some (most? all?) factory installations, the alarm drives a relay that breaks the circuit between the fuel level sender and the fuel gauge. If they've just ripped out the original alarm, it's possible this relay is still in place but not being driven by anything? Hence no connection.

Thanks for your answer, I suspected as much, so all I need to do is get power to the guage? or sender? from an ignition feed, bloody weird way of doing it.

As I understand it (not followed the wiring through first hand) the wire is a signal wire not a power supply. You would need to establish the connection between the gauge and the sender, simply adding an external 12v supply is no good.

On Mine the sender feed goes along the top of tank and along into the pillar behind the passenger door pillar. There is a connector here(which can corrode and do with a clean) this I think will then go along the sill and out into the fuse panel and wiring loom.

If you can find out which wire is/should be live coming from the sender to this conector you can then run a new one from the relay to that connector to the relay. Or even find out which one they may have cut away.

Basically I think there are 2 wires at the sender. at the connector in the door pillar you should to be able to see these at the connector. Then see what colour wire they relate to comming out the other side of the connector. And then locate these at the relay position, do a resistance test to see which one may have been cut, and then either follow it back or replace.

Hope that makes sense, had a couple of sherberts so i do aplogise if its all gobbled goop

Cheers BB,

looks like I'll be hanging upside down most of tomorrow then, just so long as I get it done for LM I don't mind.

At least the alarm works now and I can actually drive the thing, Mr Batty has worked his magic and everything is in super dooper working order, other than the fuel guage, quickly touches some Cherry Veneer.
