Hello,

This winters project is goiing to be fitting power steering to my Griff, it is a non pas car at present and I am looking to make the driving experience a little easier and hopefully nicer. I plan to go with the Subaru pas rack coupled with the original TVR/Rover pump, resevoir & hoses , as I want to keep a relatively standard look.
I am looking to source all of the parts over the next few weeks or so, I think I pretty much know what is needed from reading the rather large thread in the Chim section, the only grey areas at the moment are the lower UJ and pipe connections but I will cross those bridges when i get to them, and no doubt with a little help from you guys.
If anyone out there has any parts that may be useful to me for this conversion, and are willing to sell please le me know as it may save many hours of trawling the classifieds.

Thanks
Kev

Given the Chimp and Grief are identical in that area then all the information you need is in the [admittedly long] Chimp thread.

Personally, I'd go for an electric pump instead of the engine driven one.

Is there any other advantage to using an electric pump other than the fact it is not being driven from the engine?

Can be hidden from view.

Less parasitic load on the engine.

Should the engine let go you maintain steering.

Shorter hoses.

Cheaper and more common parts.

Don’t know if you’re knowledgable on Impreza racks - the Subaru part numbers are a nightmare - but, if not, the rack you want is from the GC8 classic, 1992 to 2000, or very early GD8 blobeye. The power racks come in 3 ratios. First, the standard WRX and lower spec cars sold in the UK, 3.2 lock to lock, 16.5:1 ratio. Second, the WRX STI grey imports, not sold in the UK, 2.7 lock to lock, 15:1 ratio. The Prodrive specials also had this rack. Third, the very very rare rack from the STI Type RA and 22B. These are 2.25 lock to lock, 12:1 ratio. The chances of finding one of those are slim to none and then modifying the pinion would be sacrilege!!
Hope this helps
