..... from what ?

I had a front upper wishbone bush go which has meant that the upper ball joint has been hammered and I have about ,5mm of play, so before it gets worse I thought I'd replace both fronts ...

Any ideas ?

Match them up to be on the safe side, but I think you'll find it's one of the Saab 900/9000 variants (there are two that I'm aware of).

About £25 from a TVR dealer, Mark. That's before club discount. (I bought one recently)

If anyone's interested the Saab part number is 8993321 (from early 90's Saab 900)

The problem is that SAAB supply different versions under the same part number that don't cause a problem with a SAAB fitting but do with a TVR.

As I understand it the same is true for the TVR parts Steve (extra spacers or something). I replaced mine at the exhorbitant cost of £8.58 (for the pair!) even if they are inferior - I would rather change them every 2 years at that price!

My new one was a slightly different casting to the old one. It looked as if it might restrict the range of camber adjustment. A few minutes with a file would probably sort it though.
The later one-piece upper wishbones require a spacer to be fitted alongside the balljoint. I'm not sure about the earlier two-piece jobbies, so maybe that's where the idea of spacers comes from. BTW, the spacer must go forward of the balljoint IIRC, or the castor (or is that KPI- never could quite work out the difference) will be wrong.

Paul.

The key point is if you want to source bits from somewhere else based on a "it's a so and so" then be prepared for bits not to fit. This often ends up in a lot of extra work/time/effort when all you want to do is get on with the job.

As for varients in TVR land... there was a shortage of ball joints some time ago so I wonder if the varients were caused by sourcing from other sources and falling into the same problem.

Surely though TVR source them from the same manufacture, the saab ones I have are bang on.
How are the Griff/Chim hubs comming along Steve?
I'm having made some nice stub axles made to take single centre spline wheels and sensors.

Wasn't that lower ball joints ? Or have the upper ones been scarce too?

I had to replace the top ball joint on a 1998 car along with the wishbone because the bolts were seized in place, the original had a spacer fitted. I bought the part from a dealer and noted that the ball part of the joint was bigger than the original, I checked and he said the originals were difficult to obtain but these replacements fitted OK. Stuck it in and found that at the correct ride height the most negative camber setting is just slightly too positive. I have gone with that setting but in reality it needs a few mm of metal taken off the end of the wishbone to be correct.
