Hi

Does anyone out there in PH land have any views/thoughts/experiences on fuel options for my Griff 500? I use the "Super" variants of unleaded obviously but is BP Ultima (97 Octane) better than Optimax Shell (Octane unkown) or are there others?

I apologise if this has been covered before but Im a little new to all of this :confused:

Others might have a more scientific view but having tried both I've found no difference - both are . I stick to Optimax because everyone says it is better . I can tell the difference to 95 Octane though.

Thought Shell Optimax was the highest octane for normal pump fuel.
Generally though unless you are using high comp ratios or boost, then normal 95 is fine.

Glad that 95 works for you but the manual and the bible both say 97+ is recommended.

I got my info from a reputable Rover V8 engine specialist and other sources.
95 premium octane from a reputable source, not cheap supermarket stuff.

Yes most Rover V8s can run on premium. TVR however set them up for super. Having said that some cars do run OK with no mods on 95 but it tends to be the 4.x litre cars. The key point is to prevent pinking and detonation which will destroy an engine pretty quickly if not addressed.

My engine suffers from pinking on HARD accelaration despite using optimax or the BP equivilent. The car isn`t running overly hot and Offords played with the timing at the last service to try and cure it all to no avail. Any suggestions peeps?..........Martin

Shell Optimax claims to be 98 Octane so should be better than other types of Super with 97 Octane.

You will hear a metallic knocking sound from the engine as the fuel ignites whilst the piston is still moving upwards opn it's complression stroke. The sound is teh piston being forced back down against the rotation of the engine. Hence it is also known as pre-ignition or knocking.

I have a 96 Griff 500.

It runs ok on Optimax or BP 97 octane.

If i cant get that or don't want to travel 6 miles to the nearest Shell station, I use regular 95 octane with octane booster (such as Wynns or there's an STP vesion) make sure to look for the one that states 'for Unleaded fuel - safe for catalytic converters' its typically about £4.50 a bottle and treats 50 to 60 litres of fuel.
mine runs great on it anyway, has any one else tried this ?

In Italy, 98 is almost impossible to find. It's the only time I've used 95 in my Chim 500, and it hated it.

(Mind you...knowing the Italians it was probably only 85, the other ten being, ahem, commission)

I use Millers from FROSTS in my 4.3. £3 a bottle if you buy 10 at once.
