How loud is your heater??
Discussion
Following the jammed heater thread, I suspect that along with the hot/cold valve the blower is not working at full power, as it seems paltry compared to the one that was in my S3.
With it on maximum, you can only just hear it going when the engine is on. Is this right?
There doesn't appear to be too much difference between the three speeds, although there is a small difference.

Mine makes an almighty noise at full whack, and puts out lots of air, so i think you may have a problem. The fan is controlled by a variable resistor under the switch (actually part of the switch) on the heater panel - might be this. I am sure David Beer will be along to give you some ideas on how to check it.
Edited to say: Just re read your post and you say '3 speeds' for the fan. Are you talking about the -not always present and nobody knows why- cold air blower fitted to the drivers side footwell, or the main fan?
If it is the main fan, I have had another thought.
After the RAC visited a friend of mine and jumpstarted his griff with a truck restart unit, he had to replace the environmental control box (a black box which the heater control panel connects to). It had been knackered by the jump start and all the switches did some wierd things afterwards - fan wouldn't turn on/off, no control over the hot/cold selection etc. Just a thought. Hope it isn't that because it wasn't cheap.

Not the cold air blower as I have a 92 Precat so no cold air blower. The up/down control still works. Testing it would be good.
With the engine off, each of the three speed settings should give progressively more airflow - and you should be able to hear the difference in fan noise. With the engine on you shouldn't be able to hear anything except 8 pot rock'n'roll.
