Another question came up while working on my Griff restoration:

I read some posts on electrical failures due to poor earthing. I noticed two welded-on threaded studs on the chassis, one on a diagonal located over the differential, where the fuel filter will be mounted onto, and the other one on the RH front diagonal supporting the outrigger.

What is the latter used for? And if not for earthing purposes, did any of you use one of these to mount an earthing-cable or -strip onto?

any reason not to do so? (since i plan to move the battery out to the trunk, i thought it might be good to route the negative lead onto the stud for the fuel filter, and another lead from the font stud to the engine-block)

Earth wherever you want apart from at a point where any parts to do with fuel or brakes are fitted

The reason for the above is that should the earth ever go bad at an earth mounting point it will get very hot during cranking and possibly damage brake parts or ignite fuel parts

Use the heaviest possible cables for the earths and supplies, the bigger the better is true in this case

Thanks for your reply. Since the number of mountings for earth-cablesare limited on the chassis, I might consider mounting the fuel filter in another location, for safety reasons.

Any idea what the front weld-stud is for?

On mine the front RH stud is used as an earth, there are a few wires on there, not sure what they all do, they are part of the wiring loom. Is your car RH or LH drive? Maybe they are used differently depending on which side the steering wheel is fitted.

Don't know about the one above the diff I'm afraid.

Hi. The earth that is bolted to the outrigger RHF wheel arch is the earth for the engine. The other end is bolted to the engine by the oil pressure switch. Pretty important the connections are clean and tight. The main battery earth is bolted to the chassis RHF under the radiator. You need to remove the lower mesh for access. Hope this helps.

Some photos relating to the original post.

1st an earth point near the steering column on a RHD car.

2nd shows the fuel filter mount.

Some RHD cars also have a stub as shown in this photo, not used on RHD cars.

And there is an earth connection in the boot behind the fuel tank, body to frame fixing.

(Photos pinched from all over the web)

HTH

The earth point in the wheel well is for the engine earth. The other end bolts to the timing cover above the oil pressure switch. A number of other earths are also on that timing cover bolt.

There are 2 studs above the diff. The right-hand one is for the brake pipe T piece. The left-hand one is not used. In my opinion this would not be an ideal earthing point for a battery located in the boot as it is only M6.

The earth point at front right of the chassis is lights, fans, horn and other bits that live up in the grill area.

The main chassis earth is the left-hand top body mount hidden pretty much under the front face of the radio. The battery cable goes to this point along with a number of other dash related earths. There are more dash related earths on the right-hand body mount.

There are a number of other earth points on the car (8 in total).
