Hi all. Just bin for a drive, stuck in traff for long periods...my, the cockpit does get hot, dunnit? Expected this, lurve me car but are there any relatively inexpensive mods/ways of reducing this heat to any degree? Car has modwise 2 speed jobby fitted and doesn`t overheat as such, any advice please?

Ok, ok. Guess I deserved those! Roof off etc...always drive with roof off, even in mid winter. Heat soak in these cars is something else. Never as bad in me ole S. Smaller engine, mind. Guess it`s TADTS! Again.
Any other bright ideas crop up you know where I am. On occasion.

I've discovered that the lack of a cup holder in the Griff is actually a massive boon since the only place I can securely store my icy cool bottle of water is between my legs. Refreshing in more ways than one

Have you considered insulating the exhaust manifolds? Coating the manifolds made a massive difference to the cabin temps with my Chim.

I have the two stage fan kit fitted (96 serp) like Sam and likewise had no problems with engine temperature (even yesterday) but I also would have enjoyed getting some ambient air moving in the foot-wells. I have found a small round vent in each foot-well with swivel flaps that appear to move by hand - and from a quick looksee it appears this is all the ventilation that is available down there. Are these round vents supposed to supply outside air and/or hot air depending on dash settings? - because they don't in my car at the moment.
Can some kind person explain what a late 96 is supposed to have w.r.t air control in the foot-wells then I can see about makinging sure it works, but there isn't much point if it was never designed to do it in the first place.

Thanks P

My 94 500 doesn't have the cold air vent in the drivers footwell that's mentioned in the bible. It only has the outlet on the transmission tunnel side of the well. Why the heck is that, and what the heck is the large diameter (@50mm)flexible hose that goes from inside the front offside wing, over the drivers footwell and disappears behind the dash towards the centre. If it's a cool air feed to the central vents, then it dont work. How do you make it work? Also, the Bible says there's a cool air fan in that wing. How is that operated?

I've only had the car 2.5 years so you can't expect me to know basic things like this now can you?

On days where the temp is 90F outside there is little or no chance of keeping cool in the cabin unless you have air-con!

Though I do find that if I keep the temp knob on cold from the moment I start the car, I do get much cooler air, presumably due to the heater pipes staying cool.

Not sure if it is really my place to hijack the thread being a newbie (by 48hrs!!) but my vehicule apparently was 'heat-sink proofed' by the previous owner and actually has a SH note to prove it!

Has not done very much to help Ms TrevorFan from getting sweaty bits over the last two days though, so perhaps it is just a gimmick!

Do I wish I had gone for the Chim 400 with AirCon? Nope...there is nothing I can complain about with 350+BHP under the bonnet, no matter how hot it gets!!

My heat valve will creep open as i drive ! I have modded it so it can only be adjusted when i press down the control at the same time as turning it, that way it stays closed. Also worth keeping the fan going at slow all the time, that way the inner wing will not heat up so much.

Mr Beer, sir! You seem to be the man of many mods!
are you the modwise chappy? If so I believe I have your two speed fan jobby. Yes, I know I`m simple but do you have any instructions for this. Seems to work very well, mounted near radiator, black plastic box, now covered in heat res. stuff! If you are, do you have any other "goodies"? If not, apologies....

Dave.

Sam and Dutchone, that vent should produce air when your vent selector is selected down (ie all the way to the upside down triangle). If no air comes through this, check the passenger one. If still no joy, check that the knob actually moves the flap in the heater box (just turn it with the ignition on and you will hear a valve whirring away). If that works, then there is a good chance that a pipe has come adrift somewhere. In the early cars, the pipe ran through the engine bay, so have a good look around.
Basically the heater box is behing the glove box and a series of pipes run from it to the various vents. They are ususally just pushed on and so can come loose.
You would know if you had an extra driver's side only fresh air fan, as you would have a know to turn it on by your right knee.
