Lots of revs but no go!

I've experienced this twice in the last month (at the same point on the same road!?!) ...

Changed up into third, put my foot down and lots of revs but no drive (for about a second) ... then it picks up again.

I'm sure it's not wheelspin (had the Griff for nearly a year now - so I know what 'that' feels like!)

I wondering whether it could be the clutch? On it's way out?

Anyone with more technical know-how than me (i.e. 'anyone') care to hazard a guess???

Has to be clutch related, I can't think of anything else in the system which could 'correct itself' like that. Could be wear or, if you're unlucky, a failing crankshaft oil seal allowing oil to contaminate the friction plate.

Dont know if its similar, but my griff used to feel like it had a turbo and when i got to about 4k revs it would hesitate for a split second and then give me a shove does this seem similar??

If it was clutch I would expect it to do this in all gears, particularly 1st 2nd??

does it feel at all like a misfire??

If the engine revs are increasing dramatically, but this is not translating into acceleration, it can be only one of two things:
1) Clutch slip. New clutch required, I'm afraid.
2) Wheelspin. Stickier tyres or less 'big foot'.

Try driving up a hill in top gear...slow down and then accelerate in top..if the revs pic up but not your speed then it can only be the clutch !

My V8s had a sticky clutch pedal which resulted in slip during spirited changes, Bit of lube on the pivot fixed it, worth checking.

So - it looks like the best I can hope for is a sticky pedal (I'll check that this evening!) - but I could well be in need of a new clutch.

Any ideas how much that's likely to cost (on a '96 Griff)?
