Hi all,
Ive currently got a 3.5 supercharged RV8 in my cobra replica. Ive got an opportunity to get a Griffith 500 engine, but power is similar to what I currently have from my 3.5, OK torque at lower rpm will be much improved and I wont need to thrash it to get the power out of it like I do the 3.5. But Id like to fit the blower onto the 500 engine. Fueling is not a problem, I can do that, the problem is what will he 500 take as far as power goes without breaking it? The blower is capable of 8psi into my 3.5, so I would guess it will give me 6 into a 5.0, so thats roughly a 40% power increase,

I would be cautious about forced induction on a "standard" 500, they have a long stroke to achieve the capacity which is where the weakness will be, others that i have seen have race spec bottom ends.

A standard 4.6 would probably be a better starting point if you're staying with forced induction, and quite a bit cheaper. 8 PSI on a 3.5 corresponds to about 1.5 psi on a 500, so unless you get a bigger blower or raise the gearing it may not be worth bothering with.

Don't bother

Buy a standard Griff or whatever you prefer. And use this one at weekends

Just LOOK at that engine. It's my background on the pc (till it's altered by Herself)

Hi all,
thanks for the replies, I had a feeling the 500 wouldn't take much more power without breaking. It would be nice to blow it a little but I could probably get a fair amount for my engine with the blower set up and running than I could for just the engine on its own, so that will help pay for the TVR lump. As for the 600BHP cobra, well it must live very near to me as I live in Norwich, but its a bit expensive, well, very very expensive to be honest,

i say go for it if you can get the motor at a good price then do man!

theres to many peeps on PH who say don't do this and don't do that I would stick the blower on and see what boost you get, its not as simple as saying on a 3.5 it will give that much and on a 5.0 will give this as i recall you had calculation porblems with boost on your blower yourself, correct me if i'm wrong but i did read your site about a year ago! great car btw

For a positive displacement blower, you can work out the compression ratio and hence approximate the boost. If you've got one of those newfangled centrefugal blowers I guess it would be harder. They aren't 'proper' blowers anyway.

I can't see a problem apart from your blower running out of puff in which case change the gearing or buy a bigger blower. Obviously you need to consider compression and how you intend to pressurise the bigger cylinder volume

Hi ,
well the blower is designed for a 5.7 chevy, I took a chance on it fitting the 3.5 and it worked out well. I would expect 6ish psi on the 5.0, but as you say, I was miles out when calculating the original boost. yes it is a centrifugal blower, sorry if thats not real enough I will see if I can afford to keep the blower and try it, depends on costs,

i looked into it (as greenV8S has ) and found that a TVR 500 lump was not much cop as the compressions too high & stroke too long. also cams/overlaps etc were no good for blowers.
the 4.6 was stated by most (all) to be the best for blowing and that the std block (x-bolted) could handle 400bhp with no probs and it revs well. i thought it was pushing it a bit.
charge cooling will be a prob at higher pressures so coolers in the the plenum were suggested as there was nowhere else to put them in a griff. this should also give around 15% extra power
you are probably well aware of most of this so sorry if you're well above my basic level of knowledge. in the end, i went for an ex-race engine with 400.

OK,
so taking it that a 4.6 would take the blower then is it worth selling the TVR 5.0 and going for a 4.6? I can sell the TVR for more than I payed for it I would guess, got to be worth 2-3K I would think judging by what they sell on ebay, so I could build a 4.6 for less than that and keep my blower,
