Recently became the owner of a '99 Griffth 500 :D and I noticed tonight when turning the ignition on that there was a continuous whirring noise.

Thought it was the fuel pump, but quickly found that one of the passenger side door mirror motors was running continuously. It must have done this in the past and I haven't noticed it above the noise of the engine as although the motor runs the mirror doesn't actually go anywhere so it's probably stripped itself off its track.

The driver’s side mirror can be adjusted up/down left/right perfectly and the up/down still works on the passenger mirror. When I press swivel right for the passenger mirror it actually stops, remember that the motor is running all the time so this is the reverse of what's meant to happen if you follow me.

I put the mirror out of its misery by disconnecting the plug inside the passenger door.

However, fixing it is the next problem. The car's still under dealer warranty, but if it's easy I'd just as soon save a 100mile round trip have a go and fix it myself.

I'm thinking that as the driver's door mirror works perfectly that it's not the adjustment joy-switch in the driver’s door that is at fault but more likely the ECU under the dash? I could just be the passenger mirror itself I suppose?

Cheers

John.

I think the mirror control is done by cunning use of a couple of relays rather than any electronics. Perhaps one of the relays has packed up? I suspect it would be very difficult to trouble shoot though unless you knew exactly how it was supposed to work in the first place.

I did a guide on how to change mirrors to the Corrado style mirrors. In it were some clues as to how the mirror ECU works. Have a search on here for corrado mirrors and you should be able to find it.

Cheers Andy,

I've been looking through all the VW mirrors info already, including your posts. I'll be getting my meter out tonight and seeing if I can work out where the offending signal is actually coming from.
