I want to fit power steering to my 96 Griff. Any information,tips,hints etc would be appreciated. I am told the power steering rack is a TVR only item, does anyone know if this is true.
IIRC, David Gerald TVR does a ful 'kit' for the power steering conversion at quite reasonable money. Might be worth having a worth with them...the Proprietor, Doug Elwood, is always very halpful and approachable, anyway.
I know that Dave Batty and Leven have both retro fitted PAS racks to cars... but yes, I understand it is a TVR unique item.
I've seen an electric version fitted too...
Electric may be a way to go,Toyota MR2 are used alot in retro fits,you'll still need a ps rack though obviously.
The pump is the least of the problems/cost. The real killer is the rack which is unique to TVR and the steering column shafts which are slightly different. Budget around £2000 but you may be able to get it cheap with recon/used parts.
I've just converted my car to PAS and it's the best thing I've ever done to it. I managed to get hold of a second hand rack for £200, bloke didn't realise it's value fortunately. I've then used an elec/hydraulic pump from a Peugeot 106. Like I say, it's transformed the car, it is so much easier to drive and it's given me the confidence to throw it around more than I used to. The non-PAS steering, used to load up really quickly and made handling the car more difficult. It's definately worth the effort to get your car converted. Ignore all the muppets who say you don't need PAS, they're usually the ones who don't have it. I've driven my car for three years without PAS and now with it, so I do know what the improvement is like.
