Door knob....!

I have inadvertantly pushed my knob (yes, OK, lets get the knob gags out of the way know shall we?...oo er missus) on the passengers side door, down too much and it has lost connectivity with the internal workings of the door. I think it happenend as a friend inadvertantly pulled the knob rather than push it when entering the car. As a result the knob was sitting proud - I therefore pushed it in a misguided way, to attempt to get it to sit flush.

Soooo...easy job,hard job? Please help as Mrs Jeffsy is giving me severe grief and the big red 'un wont be pristine for the Growl. :eek:

Probably just the rod come out of the knob, easy to put back. I have "electrified" mine so i only have to press the knob 2mm, right luxurry.

you should be able to undo the little alan key, slide your knob up to the desired hieght and then do the key back up.Then cover hole with dob of silicon sealant to stop scrotes getting to the allan key easy as you know what they are like. They,re be a load on e-bay next week.

David, i would be interetsed in your device.sounds great . I take it you use something like on the glove box placed somewhere?

Door locking solenoid and a micro switch, cut rod in half,shorten by 6mm, use metal of "choc block connector", fit spring inside and that is then the 2mm press. The switch then detects the 2mm and the solenoid does the work. I will take a photo.

BB - hmmm...I didnt mention that the whole knob now comes out of the hole ie its not connected to anything so I suspect that whatever mechanism was attached to it has been 'thrown'. It looks normal but means that the door can only be opened from the inside

The knob is not connected to the rod, the rod is held inside the knob by the pressure of the spring on the lock. I think BBs right about your grub screw though !

Thanks boys - I'll take a look this weekend.

I'm still concerned as there is no resistance at all on the knob. It just sits as low as it can in the hole with no connectivity to anything. I think I understand the concept now of the rod inside the knob but I feel that the rod has been displaced.

Pull the carpet away behind the door lock from inside the car and should be able to see the whole mechanism and work out what's gone wrong.

Basically the actuator sits well down the bottom.
This has a rod attached to it that goes up the door pilar and just sits inside the botttom of the hollow knob.

The Knob sits in the body work and the grub screw in the bodywork screws in to a sliding slot/grove on the outer edge of the knob.

This grove only goes halfway up the side of the knob to stop the knob coming all the way out buy way of the grub screw sliding up and down the grove.

If the grub screw isnt quite in the grove an utterly confused numpty of a passenger can pull the knob completely out happened to me on a couple of occasions... to scared to ask and look a numpty

Hope that helps, you shouldnt need to look behind the door pillar to fix it.
Pull the knob out and you should see the grove I am on about. In the indent where you put your hand to pull teh door open you should see the little hole for the grub screw. undo that while looking down the hole where the knob goes until its flush with the inside of the
hole. You should be able to see the operating rod too.
Slide the knob back in with the grove faceing the grub screw and sit the knob on the rod.
Do the grub screw up not to tight but so that you cant feel the nob lifting then undo it half a turnish.
You should be able to lift the knob a little and then it should stop.
The Rod pushes the Knob back up when you press the knob by the way.

Guys - SUCCESS!!!

With your - and Mr Heath's - help I fixed said problem. BB - it was a numpty of a friend who pulled my knob out (stop it!! ).

Anyway it traspired that the rod had been thrown out of the hole, hence no pressure on the knob. All I had to do was pull the carpet back, the seat forward and perform yoga to get my head in there for a line-of-site. The rod took a little coaxing due to it being an inch longer than the base of the hole. However its back in there now and working. Did I feel like a mechanic OR WHAT!!! (NB I am a little,shall we say, mechanically challenged )

The only proble I have now is that i do not have any little grub screws. If anyone has a couple spare I will gladly procure them from you for the price of a/a couple/a few pints at the Growl??!! Failing that I will add it to my list for the pre-September EuroHoon-service.
