Mobil 1 or Valvoline?

Hi all,
sorry if this has been covered, I guess it has but the search function isnt working so I thought Id just post the question:
TVR recommend Mobil 1 , this is very very expensive and if thats what it needs then thats fine, BUT Ive always used Valvoline 20-50 Racing oil in my RV8, this is expensive but no where near as much as Mobil 1. Is there any feeling that Mobil 1 is soo much better, is Valvoline something some experts use? I know RPI swear by it, but then they do sell it, so Im open to experience here,

Have been using Valvoline racing 10-40 Durablend for quite a while now,lots of tracking and spirited road driving,the engine loves it.

Depends which Mobil grade you're thinking about. The 0/40 (50) stuff is too thin. The Motorsport version is fine, but I don't see it can be worth the extra money. I use Motul 300V Comp. 15/50 in mine.

Mobil 1 Motorsport is about half price if you get it in France.

Cool, so Valvoline it is then, dont live in France, but would be worried it would go on strike if I bought it from there

I got GM 10:40 semi synth from local store the other day. £13. Runs fine.

Yer man in Middlewich reckons if you are using too much oil, it may be glazing to barrels, so a switch to mineral, then back to semi synth, can see the seal improved and oil loss reduced.

Is there anywhere I can go to see info regarding which oils go where for same processing before they are packaged into their Niche Marketting Containers ?

I was using Mobil 1 Motorsport until I asked the guy who services it (RT Racing) what they use. He said they use plain old Castrol GTX because the old engine (after all it was designed in the 1950's) just doesn't need or want such a high tech oil, and that all of them (even the Motorsport) is just too thin.

This does back up my experience of the engine getting noisier the longer after service it is, since I've been "diluting" it with the Mobil.

Apparently TVR just recommend Mobil because that's what the get free (or discounted or whatever). Just like they recommend Bridgestone, I mean Toyo, I mean...you get the idea.

So now I'm using Castrol.

valvoline do an excellent 5w/50 synthetic called VR1 Racing.

It's my oil of choice now i'm out of servicing where everyone wanted the TVR spec carlube stuff..

Excellent, so anything thats good will do then, I will stick with Valvoline then as Ive always used it in the RV8,

Old fashioned me, good old Castrol GTX. Not had sytho stuff in a RV8 since i was advised to put it in and promptly removed it. Having said that i have semi at the mo while i run in the Takara upgrade, not my choice and i hope that when i do the 1k miles, my oil pressure will return. Ready to be corrected though.

I use Castrol RS 10-60 fully synthetic which I can get for £22 + vat for 4 litres, which I have used in both of my 2 Griffs I have owned with no problems.

I used to be a Mobil 1 user mainly cos that's what it said on the tin, until one hot summer when the hot engine returned a almost unreadable oil pressure and paranoia set in. Advised to swap to Castrel GTX magnatec much better even on the Le Mans run.

valvoline also do a turbo v 15 50 which was recommended to me by aother good v8 engine firm,and its less than 15 quid at a local motor factors!
