Just picked up the griff after having a set of Gaz shocks fitted and I must say the improvement to the handling and the way the car looks has been very noticable.I went with 300lb rear springs and 375lb front, many thanks to Derek Absolutley Shocks top service/advise.Ride height and number of clicks is down to your own preferance, however after trying six different set ups went with no4.If you want a good set up without breaking the bank (for fast road use)at just over £500 well worth the money IMHO

I've heard very good things too...
...and Derek will be at the Monster Meet at Snetterton.
www.ballisticbanana.co.uk/tvrmonster.htm
so pop along and have a look and a chat at the kits/shocks/bushes etc that he's put together. VERY well priced too.
(and I know who's helped him with the set ups etc so I KNOW that they'll be good! one of the top blokes in the country
)
it amazes me how much is going on around the country!!!

Hamish,
I brought the shocks in june for £460 all in with springs, vat and postage.Derek (Absolutely Shocks) was running a promotion I think he will be doing some good deals at the Griff Growl.I am going on Sat and stopping over for Sun would be happy to talk through my findings with the different set ups if that helps.
Regards

Hamish,
I know just what you mean about the nitrons,I think I would be right in saying a number of people on here have said that unless you do alot of track days the cost of the nitrons is hard to justify.
The phone no for Absolutely Shocks Ltd is 01707 334819 webb site www.absolutelyshocks.com
In this months TVRcc Sprint mag Derek has an offer on £529 all in.
regards
Simon

Hi Guys
Yes I will be at the Griff Growl, I should say that the current offer is for the nickel plated version, the Zinc plated are still just under £500.
Thanks for your kind comments Simon, come and see me at the Growl because after the Guglielmi testing, we have come up with a different valving for the rear shocks and will upgrade your rears FOC, perhaps this winter when you are not using it so much.

Thanks all,
Derek looks like i'll be bringing my cheque book on sunday ;-) I'll track you down on the day.
Do the nickel plated ones come with rose jointed ends?
If you want rose joints no problem but everybody should be aware that rose joints will transmit more road noise and vibration than metalastic joints

I'll have to check them out on Saturday!
(not had a problem with rose joints myself. they do tighten things up, but thats why you put them on!)
Yep
I agree but all "metal to metal" joints can transmit vibration and noise on a road car and is not allways prefered by daily drivers.
I was having a chat with Richard Thorpe the other day and he agrees, he reckons that having the lower bush with a rose joint and the upper with a metalastic is a better compromise.
Me I'm easy but I say that to all the girls

thanks Simon,
I'll be there on sunday hopefully i can order a set on the day. Do you have cantact details for him?
Nitron look nice but i can't justify triple the price.

This is the point I try to make, I regularly get people ringing me to ask why I don't sell Nitrons.
Guy would love me to sell Nitrons but I don't see the point, I don't sell to the racing guys, I sell to blokes who hoon about and do the odd track day (maybe)
Why do they need a racing shock?
Anyway, I would put Hoovers car with my budget shocks up against 75% of the cars around with Nitrons and show better handling because unless the likes of Jools, Guglielmi or Warren at Topcats fitted the Nitrons, you can bet your life that the handling will be at best average and at worst crap.
This is not late night indulgence after a couple of Stella's, I have been approached by a few Griff owners disillusioned by poor setting up on their Nitrons and I feel deeply for them because they have paid out heaps of money and are not getting value for it.

Whilst i agree that there are some shocking nitron car set-ups out there, this isn't in fact a nitron problem (other than keeping tabs on their fitters of course).
It's also worth pointing out that whilst a great many people will be very happy with the Gaz dampers they will not approach the performance of a properly set-up nitron package, this is down to fundamental design differences.
A nitron is a monotube design, all it's oil is in contact with the outer body of the damper meaning it behaves more consistently in hard use, this is the one major failing of a cheap damper : that at the time when you need full and total control over the damping of the spring the cheap damper is actually getting less effective just when you need it most. The internal design of a protech for instance can be considered a mid-way design bewteen a mono and twin construction meaning it has some of the extra heat dissipation of a mono but at less cost. I have found nothing yet to touch them for value for money for drivers interested in true performance from their car.
At some point i'm going to be putting gaz, avo, protech and nitron all up against each other on an independant damper dyno so you can all see the relative performance differences .. from my experience so far of seeing damper tests the results may surprise you with just how varaible some dampers can be.
I have been reading the comments on this thread with interest because I am thinking of changing my spring and shocksfrom the standard fit.
I am a driver of no especial capability and will never race and probably not even have a track day. So my driving will be on normal roads at reasonable speeds.
I do not need the ultimate performance from the suspension, just a set that will give the car an improvement over standard.
As long as the system I choose is designed for my type of car (Griff), does what it's meant to and is delivered promptly with all the bits necessary to fit it, and it lasts for a few years without needing further adjustment or parts replacement I shall be happy.
Oh and it hopefully it comes with an info sheet to give me a clue about settings which would be helpful.
I don't see why I need to pay more money for a performance capability that I personally will never use. But may be I am looking at it too simply.

I don't think you are over simplifying(sp)the situation, you can pay from £460 all in for Avo and then go up to £2000(or thereabouts) for Ohlins.
With tired shocks and springs, all these would improve your handling, it comes down to how much you want to pay and what you are using the car for.
I favour Gaz at the budget end because IMHO they punch well above their weight, on the intermediate front the Gaz and Protech alloys with rose bearings both seem good and at the top end Nitron seem to be the best of the bunch, within reasonable budgets.
I sell double adjustable alloys and remote gas canister shocks to the racing fraternity but don't see the point in offering this sort of shock for road cars.

That would be a very interesting comparision, look forward to seeing the results.
