After sitting in a traffic jam for an hour yesterday, the gearchange on my rover boxed Grif 500 started getting sloppy, to the point it is now like stirring porridge and gear selection is a side effect.

I'm assuming that the remote linkage is failing in some way ... but ..

What does the remote linkage look like? Does anybody have any pics so I can see what it is meant to be like before I try to fix it?

Are there linkage parts that break / wear out that are good to order in before starting the job?

Or is it worth getting a dealer to look at it?

Thanks!

Steve

There are some on my Webpage

Have a look under the "Engine Out" Gallery. I've just changed the gearbox and I took a few before putting it back. They are a bit blurred I'm affraid.

The linkage may just need tightening up, if you can get at it the big nut on the back may be worth a try.

I think the left / right part is ok(ish) in that I can still feel the spring centreing effect and it feels in roughly the right place, but fore and aft movement is way out ... hopefully something just needs tightening up!

Seems like a fun job for the weekend! Is access possible from above? Or is it time to get underneath? At least it's the opposite side to the exhaust so I guess there is some access!

If it's for/aft thats the problem then it sounds like the nut on the back of the selector has worked loose. (I'm told this is a common problem) You'll have to get at it from underneath and you may have to drop the exhaust a bit to get at it. You can drop the exhaust a fair way without taking it off because the flexable section should give your some room to play with. There are only 6 bolts on the mounting plate and the rear hanger to take of to get it out of the way.
Good luck, hope it turns out to be as simple as that.

I thought you could get to the remote gear linkage from the inspection hatch on the transmission tunnel? Even if you cant get to the large nut through there, it may at least enable you see if that really is the problem before you start removing bits and pieces under the car.

You can't do anything through the hole in the tunnel apart from adjust the springs and remove the gear lever.

I've just found a piece of the linkage on the driveway - it looks very similar to the centre part of the last picture posted, complete with a circlip! It looks like it has sheared off from somewhere ...

It seems I need to order some parts! Does anybody have an online copy of the TVR parts manual so I can work out what to order?

Thanks!

Looks remarkably like part No. 10 in this manual on page 14

It turned out to be the nylon bush - a £1.50 part! It's a bit of a pain having to remove the centre console to get the gearlever out, then having to remove the spring loading plate from the remote mechanism to get the circlip on the new bush, but I can now get all the gears again.

A massive thunderstorm prevented a test drive tonight.

Thanks for all the help, pics and manuals.

Hi all,

I've got the same problem with my Chim 400 (sorry to be posting on the Griff forum!) - sloppy gearbox, and it appears that the bush has broken down and fallen out!

I was just wondering - this part - where can I get it from? is there a part number or name of it?

Thanking you all in advance

Chris

I got mine from David Geralds. Just give them a call and they'll get you the parts in the post immediately. You don't need part numbers, just an accurate description of what you want.

thanks Red Griff, most appreciated.

Just out of interest, what exactly is the part called? - my mechanical terminology is not the greatest!

Once again, thanks for the advice - I take it a simple google search will find the company in question?

Kind regards

Chris

Brilliant! - Many thanks, spoken to them, ordered and part received.

Now for the difficult bit!

Thanks once again.

I take it this is all done without having to drop the gearbox at all? Looks like I've got to do this on my Chimaera...
