Reverse Switch

Reverse lights are not working. Don't know how long they've been faulty for but I have recently had a new clutch so I'm thinking the reverse switch on the gear box hasn't been reconnected properly.

Before I start reaching for the axle stands can anyone tell me roughly where the switch is located on an SD1 gear box?

Its on the side where the gear lever goes into the gearbox remote. Driver's side IIRC.

Cheers Steve. I'll double check the connections/earth etc at the rear lights before I get underneath, but considering all the other lights work fine and the gearbox has recently been out I'm pretty sure it will be a dodgy connection at the gearbox.

I have the same problem myself, and I've been putting the job off for a couple of weeks. I found another thread with a pictures of the gearbox out, with what I presume to be the switch. It'll give you (and me) an idea what to expect which is always handy... I searched another couple of threads that describe fixing the switch as well, but I think it'll be a terminal clean up job only.. fingers crossed...

I may do it this afternoon, if so I'll post any hints.. however it sunny outside so I may just avoid using reverse a little bit longer

The switch might require adjustment to make sure reverse fully depresses the switch plunger. If you're really lucky it'll just screw in or out. Basically the switch is fitted to/through a plate by means of 2 nuts on the switch shaft, one either side of the plate. If it won't screw without undoing the nuts you have to get a suitably sized spanner on the nut which is threaded on to the switch shaft, but is hidden behind the plate to which the switch is mounted (as well as undoing the one underneath the plate and visible). Then do both of them up again without adjusting the switch...

Tust the ticket this thread as I have the very same problem. My gearbox hasn't been out though.

Did mine this afternoon. After much prodding with a multimeter I managed to trace it to one of the bullet connectors that attach the switch to the loom. It wasn't corroded, just a little temperamental. Not too tricky, but its a very very tight space if you need two hands up there

Mind you whilst doing it I found yet more dodgy connections to one of the rear light clusters, which I disturbed, and also two light switches which now need minor adjustment every now and again whilst trying this this my clock illumination came back to life Now I can see my clock can't keep time in the dark as well as during the day........

so that's two fixed, two more on the list of things to do.. I'm not sure if that's really counts as a successful afternoon
