Done 150 miles in the Griff now since I put the engine and gearbox back in. So I thought I’d just check everything over, make sure nothing was loose or falling off.

Noticed the paint on the inner wing had blistered and had a rant about how cr@p this under bonnet paint was when I realised the exhaust manifold had traces of carbon near the joint on the y-piece. Then looked at the bonnet heat shield and noticed scorch marks on it in the same area :yikes:

Put a spanned on the bracket and it was loose! Now I know I tightened these up because I had a right game getting them to line up. Maybe it has lined up better with the heat and a few miles under the belt making the bracket loose. In any case it must have been getting hot under there, would not like to think about it any more.

Re-sealed it with exhaust putty and tightened it down again. Will be buying a fire extinguisher for the car/garage!

Also I forgot to say a thankyou for the tip regarding folding the edges of the heatshield over and glueing/heat taping. Much easier than sewing it and looks better imo.

I noticed after i had refitted the exhaust.
I ran the engine until the fans kicked in then let it cool down.

Then do a second spanner check on all the exhaust clamps.

It is usual with this type of clamp arrangement, try it on a CAT V8 they become as slack as a slack thing.
