oil breather filter

after removing the oil breather filter,was wondering if flat top of the metel piece which is connected to r cover should be clean bare metel or covered in a grey coloured crud/film,

Is this the bit in place of the oil filler cap on the offside rocker? Mine's grey coloured crud.

High grifter,mines on the near side,back of engine,about the size of 2p piece,is that crud a build up over years or should it be there or scraped off?hope new roof is still looking good,cheers

Ah gotcha - under the small plastic breather cap with a foam element. From memory I can't remember, but I'd give it a clean with carb cleaner or something, and fit a new filter - very cheap from Rimmers or equivalent. IIRC there should be a pin-sized hole visible in the 2p size disc. If that's not blocked I think you're OK.

I believe the idea with this engine is that air enters the engine at the small breather and then exits from the other rocker cover into the manifold.
