Im considering changing from a 4.0L pre-cat to a
5 Litre in the next couple of months, just wondered what pluses and minuses there is between the earlier supposed 340bhp engine compared to the later supposed 320 bhp engine, I know the later engine was de-tuned to make it more user friendly around town etc,is there a noticeable power difference between the two, maybe someone who has driven them both can shed a little light, thanks in advance. Ian

You'll miss the pre-cat noise - I certainly did when I upgraded about three years ago from my 400. The first thing I did was to convert to straight through pipes - though it's much better it still isn't the same.

You'll enjoy the better build quality and steadiness of the 500 - it generally feels more modern.

Mine is a 1996 HC but drove a few non-HC and really couldn't tell the difference.

Enjoy

I think all the 500's are HC's, but only some have the badge (think this is right to say)

every single 500 i have stripped (which is a lot!) all have the same internal components to make the same bhp, so the engines make the same hp but with the later cars running cats etc may be a little down on power but not a lot, personaly i would definetly go for a serp fronted engine

Out of interest I had a 4.3BV (not a factory one unfortunatly) pre cat before the 500 and it not only felt quicker than both the 500's in reality it probably was quicker.

What it lost out on mid range torque, which wasn't much it certainly made up at the top end. Shame it ate itself really

A BV might feel quicker (shorter gear) but surely isn't.

your right on quiny on peak horsepower the 4.3 was not far behind a 500 at all, they run the same heads same cam, induction etc... only difference is 700 cc's, and we all no that plenums and the induction restrict big motors more than little ones, so just by adding 700 cc's you wont see much gain in hp but a lot more low down and mid range power, also a smaller engine with the same bolt on bits always alot more camier and so will feel faster!
Hows your motor going gerjo?

Indeed, it's especially the torque that makes the difference.

My engine is truely brilliant. It is so fast, so revvy, and yet runs so smooth, although the smoothness below 2000 rpm could be better, but that's mostly due to the hot cam (H404) I guess. Maybe an Omex could cure this, but it's fine for now.

Very good, I take it you think I must be mad to even consider swapping, must admit Iam starting to have second thoughts though, would really miss the precat sound

I traded my 400 griff last year for a 500, i only thing i miss is the sound, thinking about removing the back box to make it sound abit more of a monster, but not sure if this effects the back pressure or performance.
I took my griff 400 around curborough sprint 71 secs and the 500 went around in 66 this year. its nicer to drive quicker and not to bad on fuel.
JUST DO IT!!!!!!

Cheers Rob
