Discussion
On a couple of occasions now I have experienced what can only be described as braking without the assistance of the Servo (you know, early VW Polo feel): push hard, only slight depression of pedal, little affect, wooden feel etc. This only happened at low engine speed i.e. idle or sub-idle. I'd thought that perhaps the rev's were insufficient to be creating adequate vacuum for providing assistance but I'm not convinced of this.
If the vacuum hose was kinked, blocked or holed, the problem would be apparent in all conditions to some degree and there'd be the possibility of hearing the induction of air if holed.
I guess that there's the chance of a fault within the master cylinder and to a lesser degree the calipers (which are free with pads bearing equally on both surfaces of the discs; also there's no inclination for pulling to one side).
My initial thoughts are that the fault lies within the servo; though it's a simple mechanism, has anyone experienced partial failure of this component? Is it a b*****d of a job to change? How much for a new one? Any other thoughts?
Oh! and for those concerned for my safety  or the safety of others :yikes: (I'm only partially stupid), the car is off the road for some maintenance. Just wanted to put the question out there for a Brain Stormin' before carrying out my own diagnosis.

Hum, sounds like either no hydraulics at all or a bit of hydraulic lock? I think from memory and without consulting my bible or BB's excellent website that the brake servo is off something common, so should be easy to fix.
Sorry I can't be more helpful!
When is your motor back? There is a charity track day at Castle Combe on the 1st Oct that I am finding out more details for, if you can make it.

Hi Karl; ta for the reply.
I'll give it a good checkin' out, I can normally sort out most things mechanical/hydraulic; it is my trade after all. Failing this, I can of course quiz my daughter as she seems to have an answer to everything these days.
As for the track day, it's something I've yet to do. I may end up missing this one however as the car is in for a front end respray, some minor paint repair to the rear and a check over. When returned (Friday), I've some new poly bushes, discs and hoses to fit all round. Whilst all the gubbins is apart I'll be blasting and repspraying the wishbones. Should I be ready for that weekend after my latest splash-out, I don't think I could afford the fuel to get up to CC let alone around it. Ta for the thought though
. Some day soon.
Bruce
