Lifting/Holding the engine weight

I have to change the engine mounts as they are looking pretty tired.
I have a 1.5 tonne pulllift and Nylon slings and some strenghthend Rafters in the garage.
What I am after is advice on where to sling the engine as not to cause any damage and is it best to put the car on a ramp of get on four axles stands to keep the engine square when lifting/holding the weight while I change teh mounts.
Any other pointers on changing the mounts also appreciatted.

Hi BB,

I'd put your strap around the back of the engine mount plate. There is a lip on the rear that will stop the strap slipping forward and holding the mount.
Run the strap under the engine just behind the front pulley where the sump is shallower.



This felt very secure for me when I did it. Also I'd remove the NS mount first. This will give you more room to remove the OS one and get it back in because it's abit more of a fiddle.

Stick the car on stands and take the front wheels off. You will find it a lot easier to access the mounts through the wheel arch. Also it may be a good excuse to invest in a decent set of ratchet ring spanners. I found mine a God send

Also a good opportunity to put some heat shield round the new mounts to stop them getting cooked by the manifolds.

Wouldn't it be easier to pick the weight up by a suitable spreader plate under the sump, just do one side at a time to avoid any stability issues?

The reason I was goingto use a sling etc is I have thme to hand and I didnt want to cause any damage to the sump,I imagine a plate with a whole in to take where the plug would be woulds prehaps be ok, and then use an trolley Jack?? gently??

The engine is big but relatively light ,I think I would consider putting it up on four stands and use a trolly jack or jacks with timber to protect the underside,I think jacks will give you finer control just a thought Steve.

Glad I done it, the near side was more than a little tired. Took me about 4 hours to do the both with a few tea brakes

Used axle stands in the end and supported the engine with a trolley jack and a some wood to spread the weight.

Interesting. Is that a spongy rover mount or a harder TR8 mount?

wouldnt know, I would say its the original so whatever they used then. The new ones dont have that domed bit at the top and do seem slightly harder.
